Argentina is a relative newcomer to the international wine scene, largely through the efforts of Nicolas Catena beginning in the 1980s, which really came to fruition in the early years of this century. While Malbec was the driving force leading to that international recognition and acclaim, becoming synonymous with Argentine wine production, it became easy to overlook that: 1) There's been a vibrant, while very localized and isolated viticultural tradition in the country dating back to the mid 19^th century, 2) The success of Malbec has effectively overshadowed the recognition of superb wines made from varietals such as Bonarda, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, Semillon, Torrontes, as well as today's Chardonnay, 3) The international acclaim that the Catenas helped create has led to a massive investment of money and, more importantly, expertise, into the country, such as the Bodega DiamAndes, owned by the Bonnie family with deep roots in Bordeaux and developed with the assistance of the acclaimed, recently passed, Michel Rolland.

From high altitude (3,600 feet) vineyards in the Andean foothills region known as Clos de los Siete, farmed sustainably, entirely from estate fruit, vinified in a low interventionist manner, fermented and aged in stainless steel.

We're still waiting for the first Spanish wine that disappoints. Seemingly from the smallest shelf price to the highest we have to offer; the wines always punch well above their weight. Probably a contributing factor is their unique ability to appeal to both new and old-world wine palates. After a hiatus of a few years, we were thrilled to receive a really generous offer on the Ludovicus to pass onto our Hazel's Community. The first vineyards in the Terra Alta region of Catalonia were planted by the Romans during the 3^rd century and the region remains prime growing grounds for topflight Garnacha (Grenache) with its limestone dominated, high altitude (1,400 feet) hillside slopes within sight of the Mediterranean. For a wine at this price level to receive the degree of hands on care in both vineyard and winery, including four months aging in French and American oak barrels, is remarkable.

“Cola Baladin” is a soft drink which contains no coloring or preservative and is produced with the kola nuts bought from the "Kola Slow Food Presidium” in Sierra Leone, and part of the revenues from the its sales will be donated to the Slow Food Foundation for Biodiversity to support the Presidium project. Another important and rather odd thing about this drink: the use of these nuts, and the necessary choice not to use artificial colorings, means that this new Baladin drink has a rather unusual color for a cola: IT’S RED! This red color sets it apart from more commercial products.
