For many years Les Jamelles has been one of ours, as well as the Hazels' Community's, favorite value labels, producing varietally correct wines from the south of France. While many such producers respond to their popularity and success by going upscale with their bottlings, the founder and winemaker at Les Jamelles, Catherine Delauney, has gone in the opposite direction by creating a value label for her own value label, Les Petites Jamelles. Over the past several months we have sold copious amounts of Les Petites Jamelles Blancs off of our Europe Under $10 display, located at the end aisle 42/44, and when we were offered their rose at a fantastic end of vintage clearance price we dove in without hesitation.

The producers offer no guidance as to the varietals in play, but to us the wine suggests the usual suspects of the region: Grenache , Cinsault, Carignan, with a touch of Rolle (Vermentino). Sustainably farmed and very simply produced, the resulting beverage is brilliant pink in color, expressive on the nose with elements of red currant, peach and tropical fruit. Crisp, round, and fresh on the palate, plenty of acidity, with a subtle mineral flourish on the finish. Foodwise, just about anything lightly textured and favorable.

Over recent years it's been a little disappointng to see the demise of the quality, sub $10 Cote du Rhone, with more and more mid teens becoming the median price with some labels now cracking the $20 level. The Oraison provides that old school pricing, in a fully mature, well aged package. Think of it as a shut in coming out into the light of day: while showing some initial savory notes it's a bit reticent initially, but as it wakes up and breaths some fresh air, the color comes to it's cheeks, gradually expands and opens to the world, revealing subtle earth tones, hints of violets, mashed cherries. With more time it becomes friendlier and more engaging with deeper nuances of dried fig emerging. Readily apparent acidity and tannins keep the conversation flowing. Slow roasted ribs with your favorite style of BBQ sauce and a roll of paper towels complete the picture.
