It's here at last! You can order my new book by visiting this link on my website or clicking on the photo above. Use the “Order notes (optional)” field at checkout to request a simple autograph or a book signed to your first name. Remember, local authors and independent outlets appreciate when you buy direct from them in person or at their websites. (Due to unexpected demand (a good thing) and a glitch at the publisher's shipping department (a bad thing), I am temporarily out of books for online sale until Monday or Tuesday, February 7-8. Please backorder. You also can find my book at Bart's Books, Rainbow Bridge, Farmer & the Cook, Ojai Valley Brewery and Ojai Valley Museum in Ojai, Chaucers Books in Santa Barbara, The Book Loft in Solvang, several bookstores in L.A., and wherver fine books are sold.

Jess Starwood's special guest workshop on January 22 filled up fast so we scheduled another on Sunday, January 23. It quickly sold out, too, so we added another on Sunday, February 27. Now that one is full! Click on the event in the events calendar below to join the waiting list. |

Giving credit where credit is due |

In these newsletters I've been sharing some of the principles that guided the writing of the book. In the December newsletter I shared Principle #1: "Nature is the teacher; I am a guide." In the January newsletter I wrote about Principle #2: Value the wisdom of Indigenous healing traditions and Principle #3: Consilience.
This month I'm sharing Principle #4: Give credit where credit is due. My book launch on Saturday, February 5, at Ojai Valley Museum's Chumash Garden will be an opportunity to thank the many people who contributed to this collaborative effort. Please join me and Rondia for that free event.
I began giving credit under Principle #2 by acknowledging the invaluable contributions of Indigenous Californians. The book's dedication reads "This book is dedicated to my Chumash plant teacher, Juanita Centeno, and to all the Indigenous healers and plant experts of California, past, present, and future."
Beyond that, the Acknowledgments section of the book recognizes by name my family, teachers and colleagues who contributed to the writing of the book in so many ways. I could have greatly expanded on that paragraph but you have to draw a line somewhere. Thank you, all.
I also acknowleged a select few of the 40 (!) photographers who shared their photos. Randy Wright of Santa Barbara Botanic Gardens, Jim Adams, Ben Grangereau, Keir Morse, and Steven Norris went above and beyond in their generosity.
In addition, 9 herbalists contributed recipes. Please visit this page on my website for a complete list of recipe and photo contributors. As you can see, my name is on the cover but so many others have their imprint on what lies inside.
You can now find the book in most bookstores but please consider ordering the book on my website where I am able to generate some income from the sales. Look for a field at checkout entitled “Order notes (optional)” where you can request either a simple autograph or a book signed to your name. Please specify which type of signature you would like. |

February Full Moon Sunset Nature Hike and After-Party
|
|
|
On Wednesday evening, February 16, from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m., I’ll lead a Full Moon Sunset Nature Hike to a vista point above the Ojai Valley where we can watch the sun set at about 5:30 p.m. and the full moon rise at about 6:10 p.m., giving us a nice window of time to take it all in.
Then at 7:00 p.m. you’re invited to join me and Rondia on Bryant Street at Ojai Valley Brewery's heated outdoor dining area where brewmaster Jeremy Haffner and his staff will be pouring his amazing locally-sourced beers, ales, stouts, and non-alcoholic beverages. Food will be provided by Munch Break Food Truck. The cost of food and beverages is not included in the price of the hike.

Contrary to the title of the book, it is not limited to plants of the Santa Monica Mountains nor to what we usually think of as wildflowers. It's a complete 565-page flora of every flowering plant growing below 3000 feet in Southern California and includes almost 500 beautiful color plates. A book like this published today surely would cost in the neighborhood of $50. |
