New website at HerbWalks.com

After climbing a steep learning curve, Lanny can finally see the top of the hill.

With a lot of help from Russell Boyd  ( www.anathallo.net ), my new website is up and running at www.HerbWalks.com. Like our native plant environment, it is full of information: coming events, video, photos, a bookstore, and an extensive section of links to all kinds of information. Please visit soon.

Special thanks go out also to Robert Gluckson of Good Cause Marketing for his professional help and to Khabir Southwick of Natural Healing Consultants of Ojai  for his sage advice.

I can see that this website will forever be a work-in-progress, just like me, but it's out of the virtual oven and ready for your consumption.
Lanny's Bookstore

Please visit my new online Bookstore  and purchase one of my recommendations.

Over the years, I have collected many books on herbs, native plants, plant identification, the Chumash and other related subjects. Some of these are now readable at Google Books for free
-- which is great -- although I've found it a little cumbersome to maneuver through reference books there, as opposed to novels where you start on page 1 and simply move forward.

Many of those in my Bookstore , however, are ones that you will want to hold in your hand as you walk the trails. Please consider buying them directly from my site where I can earn a small percentage of your purchase to help in building and maintaining the site. Thanks!
Hummingbird Sage

First Herb Walks of 2012

Are you ready to leave hibernation and get out on the trails and roads to see what Nature has to offer this year?

The Herb Walk season begins on Sunday, February 12, with an easy walk up West Sulphur Mountain Road between Ojai and Ventura. The shady environment of the lower trail is home to California Bay trees, Cleavers, Toothwort, and Hummingbird Sage (pictured).

Next up on Saturday, February 18, is an Herb Hike on the lower portion of Gridley Trail in the East End of Ojai. This steep, sometimes rocky, trail straddles the creek and leads us through trees to the chaparral and views of the valley.

Then on Sunday, Febrary 26, we return to the Old Baldwin Road Trail for an ADA-accessible Herb Walk 'n' Roll.

The cost is $25 for adults or $15 for seniors and students. Kids 5-12 go free with an adult.

Find out more at the website's  Calendar  and then sign up on the Register  page.

Dr. Fred

Herb Workshop with Dr. Fred

Learn from an expert how to make simple herbal teas and medicines from locally available plants.

We are pleased and excited to present  "Herb Preparation In The Kitchen,"  our first indoor workshop with Dr. Fred Siciliano, OMD, LAc, MH.

Join me and Dr. Fred in Ojai on Sunday, February 19, from 2:00 - 4:00pm, as we explore making herbal teas and broths for various household health uses, including the common cold, bronchitis, indigestion and intestinal flu. Herbs to be covered will include some that can be found growing wild (mugwort, horehound, elder) and others that can be grown in the garden or purchased locally (garlic, celery, onion, ginger, cinnamon, peppermint, St John’s Wort). We will talk about the plant family, habitat, traditional uses and preparation of each of these herbs. We will then prepare them and taste them together in class! Additional snacks will be provided.

Fred Siciliano is a Licensed Acupuncturist & Medicinal Herb Specialist who has more than 25 years experience in formulating and combining herbs for various medical conditions. He has trained under the late Sidney Yudin, learning how to use herbs from all over the world, including those found in America, Europe, Asia and South America. He has a private practice  in Ventura, CA.

The cost is $35 which includes all materials.

You can sign up right here or visit the Calendar  on the website for more information.
