January 2024 HerbWalks & OjaiHerbal Newsletter
Wednesday, January 24
Rondia and I are continuing our popular monthly Full Moon Sunset Nature Hikes. So as long as you keep attending, we will keep leading them. If you haven't been on one and you're fit enough to do it, we highly recommend you experience this phenomenon that is unique to the geography and beauty of the Ojai Valley. Plus, they occasionally coincide with a night, like January 24, when the Ojai Valley Brewery has a food truck on site. Why OVB for the after-party? Click on the photo by Joe P. Powers to learn more and sign up.
You can order my book by visiting this link or clicking on the book cover image above. Then at checkout you can use the “Order notes (optional)” field to request a simple autograph or a book signed to you or that special person who's receiving it as a gift. This personal touch is something not available when purchasing on Amazon. Plus you can support my authorship financially by buying directly from me. Thank you!

The amazing Internet!
End-of-the- year link sharing
In the course of each year many fascinating (or otherwise interesting) links to articles, podcasts, studies and the like come my way. There's not always room in the newsletter or time on my hands to share them so here are some I think are well worth checking out. A few may hide behind paywalls but I'll leave it to you to find your way around those or decide which wall is worth paying for.

The first Full Moon Hike of 2024 is on Wednesday, January 24

On Wednesday evening, January 24, from 3:15 to 5:45 p.m., my wife Rondia and I will lead a Full Moon Sunset Nature Hike to a vista point above the Ojai Valley where we can watch the simultaneous sunset and full moonrise. The sun will set and the full moon will rise at about 5:00 p.m., giving us a nice window of time to take it all in.

Following the hike is an optional “after-party” with local beer and barbecue at the Ojai Valley Brewery

Registrants will receive instructions on where to park. From the trailhead we’ll gradually walk about 1.5 miles on a well used dirt road with gradual elevation gain to the vista point, stopping along the way to meet some valuable native plants including:

  California Buckwheat
  Wild Horehound
  Black & Purple Sage
  Coastal Sagebrush
  Toyon
  Yucca and
  Prickly-Pear

After witnessing the setting of the sun and rising of the moon, we’ll walk back to the trailhead by remaining daylight, moonlight, and flashlight, returning to the trailhead at about 5:45. Then you're invited to join us at the brewery.
