Workshop with Carol Wade in the Garden on Saturday, June 10

Registered herbalist Carol Wade will host us at her Earth Island Medicinal Herb Garden  in Ojai on Saturday, June 10, for a 6-hour, early summer outdoor workshop to appreciate this amazing garden and gain hands-on experience of the many ways plant medicine lends itself to whole body/mind health.

In addition to founding and maintaining the Garden, in 2016 Carol founded the Ojai School of Herbal Studies, a 22-month herbal studies program that utilizes the garden, hands-on medicine making, and an in-depth education in how to use herbs safely and effectively, including terminology, plant chemistry, anatomy and physiology, an extensive materia medica, and actual herb cultivation. This workshop will be a sample of what her students experience.

Carpinteria Salt Marsh Herb Walk awaits you on Sunday, June 11

On Sunday, June 11, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. we will visit the Carpinteria Salt Marsh Nature Park, also known as El Estero, a rare salt wetland in Southern California. Nearly destroyed by development, the remaining estuary was restored in the late 1990s by a group of concerned citizens along with the City of Carpinteria, UCSB, and the Land Trust for Santa Barbara County. Completed in 1997, the 8-acre portion of the marsh owned by the City of Carpinteria was renamed the Carpinteria Salt Marsh Nature Park.

The park is home to hundreds of migrating birds and other wildlife, including exotic sharks, rays and native fish when conditions are right. Depending on the tide level, we may be able to see marine wildlife like those mentioned above.

Witness the revival of Arroyo Hondo Preserve on Saturday, June 17
The Land Trust for Santa Barbara County’s Arroyo Hondo Preserve has always been an amazing example of California’s biodiversity. The Montecito Journal describes it as “one of Santa Barbara’s most significant treasures.” Since the Alisal Fire swept through it in October of 2021, it also serves as an example of the amazing regenerative power of Nature. On June 17 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., we’ll return to observe how the land is regaining its legendary status as “the jewel of the Gaviota Coast.”

Summer Solstice Walkabout at Taft Gardens & Nature Preserve on Saturday, June 24
Please join me for a Summer Solstice Walkabout at Taft Gardens and Nature Preserve on Saturday, June 24 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. “Walkabout” is an Australian term for a temporary return to traditional Aboriginal life, taken especially between periods of work or residence in modern society and usually involving a period of travel through the bush.

That is what I have planned for you in observance of the Summer Solstice. We will take a break from modern life for 3 hours to experience Nature as our own ancestors did, although for a much shorter time than the traditional Australian journey and as a group instead of solo.

Would you like to see a positions offered/ positions wanted column?
I recently received a message from an herb walks attendee, a successful actress and model, who is hearing the calling to work in the herbal or holistic health field. I'll share her appeal below but it got me thinking that this newsletter could serve as a bulletin board of sorts for people looking for opportunities to work, intern or learn, and those offering such opportunities. If you would use such a space, please email me at lanny@herbwalks.com

You can also use that address to reach me if the message below resonates with you.

"I've always had an affinity for the power of nature's way to restore our bodies' balance, collecting books on the topic and attending the occasional lecture. I began seriously studying herbs and plant medicine a few years ago, attending workshops, herbal intensives, and plant walks with Lanny. I have a bit of hands-on experience helping friends and acquaintances with their wellness journey through detox and natural healing.

With the current writer's strike and other looming entertainment industry strikes, I feel now would be the perfect time for me to really make the transition from a career I've known for countless years into one that speaks to my soul on so many levels. I'd like to learn how to make a living in the plant medicine industry and welcome any job opportunities in which to do so. Thank you!"
If you own or manage a website, you're probably paying too much for domain hosting and struggling to get good customer service when you need it. I know I was until I got fed up and searched for an alternative. I found Nixihost and I'm so happy with them I want to share them with you. Click on their logo above to learn more. You owe it to yourself to take a look.
