October Events
Friday, October 6
I'm proud to have been a part of the Taft Gardens' history of public offerings, dating back to the early 1990s, and I'm stoked to see the renaissance taking place there since John Taft's adult grandchildren have stepped up and into the driver's seat. Please join me and Rondia for Taft's first OaktoberFest celebration this Friday, October 6. Get all the details here.

Sunday, October 8

Please join me this Sunday at Barnes & Noble in Ventura where I'll sign copies of my book,  Medicinal Herbs of California: A Field Guide to Common Healing Plants, and answer questions about it. Here is a link to the event listed at the Barnes & Noble Ventura website.

Please join me anytime between 2:00 and 4:00 p.m. The place is HUGE and there's a cafe!

Sunday, October 22
On Sunday, October 22, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. I will lead an Herb Walk at Carpinteria Salt Marsh, a new favorite place for herb walks in the Santa Barbara area. Why a new favorite? Click here or on the photo above by John Brant to learn why and sign up for the walk. (Obvious clue: it's the marine life as well as the great plant diversity.)
Saturday morning, October 28
In honor of Oaktober, my monthly Natural History Walk at Taft Gardens & Nature Preserve will focus on oaks and the ecosystems they support in their role as the "foundation species." There's no article to read below. Just click here or on the image above to go to the event page at HerbWalks.com.
Saturday evening, October 28
That same Saturday evening, from 5:00 to 7:15 p.m., Rondia and I will lead a Full Moon Sunset Nature Hike above the Ojai Valley where we can watch the simultaneous sunset and watch the moon rise over the Topa Topa Bluffs. Click here or on the photo above by Judy Cheske to sign up. Look below for the special after-party to follow the full moon hike.
Saturday night, October 28

After two hikes that day, I know I'll be ready to sit down and enjoy one of Jeremy Haffner's signature California native plant-based brews. Please join me and Rondia at Ojai Valley Brewery for an optional After-Party at 7:30 p.m., right after the Full Moon Sunset Nature Hike. You can read all about it here. No need to register for this part of the evening. Of course, we'd love to have you join us for the hike but you're still welcome to show up at the party.

If you own my book or you're considering it, here's another reminder to click on the following link for the free hyperlinked bibliography I created to save you the hassle of copying long URLs from the printed page to the web sources cited in the book.

This month's full moon hike on Saturday, October 28, includes an after-party

On Saturday evening, October 28, from 5:00 to 7:15 p.m., my wife Rondia and I will lead a Full Moon Sunset Nature Hike to a vista point above the Ojai Valley where we can watch the simultaneous sunset and full moonrise. The sun will set and the full moon will rise at about 6:20 p.m., giving us a nice window of time to take it all in. Following the hike is an optional “after-party” at the Ojai Valley Brewery.

Registrants will receive instructions on where to park. From the trailhead we’ll gradually walk about 1.5 miles on a well used dirt road with gradual elevation gain to the vista point, stopping along the way to meet some valuable native plants

Appeal Aims to Protect California’s Pine Mountain, Reyes Peak from Controversial Logging Project

From Los Padres ForestWatch: Conservation groups filed an appeal in the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on September 19 to cancel a controversial logging and vegetation clearing project atop Pine Mountain and Reyes Peak in Southern California’s Los Padres National Forest.

The appeal seeks to protect a remote ridgeline important to Indigenous groups, climbers, hikers, and other outdoor enthusiasts concerned about the future of this popular forest. In 2022, a coalition of conservation organizations filed lawsuits against the Forest Service on the grounds that the logging and chaparral clearing project would violate environmental laws, harm vulnerable wildlife, and do irreparable damage to the ecology of the forest.
