Hungry for Music Notes | December 2017
Hungry for Music is an organization that supports music education and cultural enrichment by acquiring and distributing quality musical instruments to underserved children with willing instructors and a hunger to play.

Music Instrument Donations Hits Annual Record

Two weeks ago, Hungry for Music donated over two dozen music instruments to the Feel Good Tour, a group based in Roanoke, VA; to help them kick off their annual Holiday instrument drive.

The donation put us over 708 for the year, a new annual donation record! With six weeks left in 2017, we would like to reach 1,000 instruments donations before the end of year.

With recent donations to Internal Creations, Bay Area Music Project, Global Voices, Campus International, Rock to the Future, Detroit Public schools and others we are now over 800.

Your end of year donation to Hungry for Music will help us repair and take care of distribution costs of shipping and delivery to programs and individuals in need of quality music instruments. It will also allow us to purchase new instruments, such as guitars, ukuleles, djembes, and string instruments.

Please help us give the gift of music by supporting us on Giving Tuesday and jump starting a successful end of year fundraising campaign. We appreciate your support!

Music Instrument
Collecting in Long Island

The first D’Addario Foundation sponsored music instrument drive took place on November 2nd and was a huge success. The drive collected almost 100 instruments that will be re-distributed to various school and after-school music programs. Big thank you to Suzanne D’Addario and Danielle Hall at D’Addario who spearheaded the effort. Also, we are grateful to Spirit of Harmony Foundation, Instruments in the Cloud, and Lyft for supporting the effort.

By us all working together we are able to increase the number of lives touched by the power of music.

The event was such a success that another is scheduled for December 1 in Chicago! See next item.

Spreading the Gift of Music to South America

We recently made a donation, through an organization in Florida, to Pedregosa villages: Cajibio - Cauca – Colombia, in South America. Hungry for Music donated a half dozen brass & woodwind instruments that will allow more children to participate in La Pedregosa Banda Sinfonica. We are able to make donations to other countries because of church, school, and/or business organizations taking care of shipping the instruments.

Please help us continue to expand our mission.

Adam and Rachael Solomon in action

Folks That Help Keep Our Mission Going

After organizing a successful instrument drive for his bar mitzvah, Adam Solomon has continued to support Hungry for Music for his high school service project hours. Adam, with the help of his mom and driver, Rachael, pick up instrument donations for Hungry for Music in the DC Metro area. They have picked up dozens of instruments for us so far and really enjoy the experience of connecting with the donors. I know that Adam’s mom cannot wait until he get his driver’s license! Thank you both for your support of Hungry for Music’s outreach!

Service Projects Fuel Our Growth

More than half of the music instruments that we receive and re-distribute are collected by kids performing a service project for a bar/bat mitzvah, eagle scout, or music organization.

We want to express our gratitude to these kids for the hard work and dedication they put into their recent service projects:

Jonah Lieberman, Brookline, MA. Jonah collected over a dozen instruments and raised $1,300.00 for his recent bar mitzvah!

Zoe Soteres, Pittsburgh, PA. Zoe organized a benefit concert and raised $1,100.00 to support Hungry for Music instrument donation program. Zoe will also be supporting HFM as a volunteer in the Pittsburgh area. Zoe’s high school group is called Young Artist’s Foundation. They want to support us more with future events.

Jackson Ledbetter, Haymarket, VA. Jackson went all out for his Eagle Scout service project. He shattered the record for instruments collected with over 270, including over 60 guitars. His drive lasted over a period of five months and culminated with a concert at Contemporary Music Center in Haymarket, VA with his band and others. We greatly appreciate the support Jackson received from his parents, Menzie and Jerry at Contemporary Music Center, and Music & Arts, who donated twenty brand new guitars to his project.
