Hungry for Music Notes
Fall 2019
Changes

It’s has been a busy and exciting fall for Hungry for Music.  We opened up our school application period at the end of July and it’s been challenging keeping up with requests, follow-ups, and shipments.  Hungry for Music has shipped and delivered over 250 instruments to school programs this Fall in over 25 states, including Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, New York, New Jersey, Arizona, California, Florida, Tennessee, Texas, Louisiana, Missouri, Oklahoma, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Mississippi.  We also supported mission programs in Uganda, Haiti, and Chile.  The latest donations helped us surpass 1,000 instruments donated this year.  This is the earliest we have reached this milestone and hope to distribute another 200 – 300 instruments by the end of the year.

I appreciate everyone who contributes to our mission and allows us to provide this service to aspiring young musicians.  Hungry for Music could not do what it does without the help of others and I am grateful for this support.  It’s been gratifying to witness our outreach continue to grow to help more music programs, both school and after-school.  Hungry for Music will soon be embarking on the Magic Music Bus Tour II to establish chapters in 60 cities.

We look forward to continuing to expand our outreach and feel that setting up chapters is the logical next step in our growth.  As we expand, more support is needed.  Please consider Hungry for Music in your year-end giving plans.  Thank you for your support.

Peace and harmony through music,

Jeff Campbell

Tribute to Big Al to support DC school

Big Al’s niece Alayna singing Ave Maria.

Big Al pals, Cerphe Cowell and Dick Bangham, going over all-star lineup.

Big Al’s lovely wife, Patsy, with artist Dick Bangham.

A benefit concert featuring a who’s who of DC-area musicians paid tribute to their good friend and fellow musician, Big Al Sevilla, at the 930 Club on August  11th.  The proceeds from the concert, and t-shirt designed by artist Dick Bangham, will purchase marching drum equipment for Anacostia High School.  Thank you to all the musicians who participated.  Special thanks to Big Al’s wife Patsy, Lisa White, and Dick Bangham for helping plan this special tribute.

The proceeds from the concert will benefit Big Al’s high school alma mater, Anacostia High School.  The band program has requested marching drums, so Hungry for Music will use the almost $2,500 donated to purchase drums for the band program.
Big Al’s spirit will carry on through these donations.  Photos by Linda Parker.

First Donation of
School Year

Last year, we ran out of saxophones and Leah was put on a waiting list.  She was able to find a temporary loaner, but now she is able to continue in her second year of band class with her very own saxophone.  Play on, Leah!

A Van Load of Accordions

Hungry for Music picked up a generous donation of 15 Hohner & Weltmeister accordions from a donor in a Maryland, who is downsizing.   The value of the collection is over $20,000.  Jack Brantley of Accordionology in Decatur, GA will sell them through his shop.  Hungry for Music will use the proceeds to purchase new instruments and to cover operating costs such as shipping and repair.

Mother Releases
Late Son’s Music
to Honor his Life

We are grateful to Susan Coti for contributing proceeds to Hungry for Music from this music memorial tribute to her son, Niall.  Please check it out and share.

She wrote:

This project celebrates my son Niall and the beautiful music he composed, improvised and performed between the ages of 16 and 19 years old.  Niall was never able to fulfill his potential.  He was killed in Afghanistan in June of 2012 while serving as a U.S. Marine.  I wanted to do something to celebrate Niall's 30th birthday (June 21) and commemorate seven years of missing him and thought releasing an album of his music would be a meaningful and enduring way to honor him.

Community Support

From Springfield, VA

Worship pastor, Gary Mitchell, at Journey Church in Springfield, VA collected over 35 music instruments.  The equivalent will be distributed to title one schools in Springfield.  We appreciate volunteer Sam Tyler picking up the bounty.

From Deerfield, IL

Piano Power held an instrument drive in their community and rounded up a nice collection of instruments including a drum set.  Thank you to volunteer Kate Schell for picking up the donated instruments.

From Ashokan, NY

A brother and sister having fun with the Instrument Petting Zoo at the Summer Hoot.

Hungry for Music is one of the sponsors of the Winter and Summer Hoots at the Ashokan Center.  We are grateful for this partnership and enjoy hosting the Instrument Petting Zoo for the kids and the overall good vibes at this fun family festival.  The Ashokan Center is a drop off location for instrument donations and they advertise this to attendees of their workshops held year round.  Because of this support, we collect a couple of van loads of instruments every year at the Ashokan Center.

Please help us continue to expand our mission.

Go Fund Me for a
Special Need

We were inspired to share this, after it was brought to our attention.  Olivia started a Go Fund Me for her friend, Lily, who needs a special French horn built because she has no left hand.  Please support Olivia’s effort.

Testimonials

‘’We couldn't do it without Hungry for Music providing instruments for Rock to the Future students!’’

~Jessica Craft, Director, Rock to the Future, Philadelphia

‘’We picked up your donation of instruments from the HfM volunteer.  We are overwhelmed!  It is beyond anything we would have ever anticipated.  From all us at Building a Bridge to Uganda and more importantly, the many children who will have the opportunity to experience music, we thank you.

Your organization and mission is a blessing. These instruments were important to their owners.  Through their openness to share and Hungry for Music’s work, the love of music is available to people who would have not had the opportunity to experience this love.

In our case, we would have never been able to offer this love to the children that have been placed in our lives and mission if it were not for your and others generosity.  We thank you for everything that you and your organization has done.  Please convey our appreciation and best wishes to all.’’

~Louis Buonomo, Building a Bridge to Uganda

~Music teacher, Legacy Traditional Elementary School, Gilbert, AZ

I would like to take this moment to thank you guys so much for providing instruments for several of my students.  They are SO excited to have their very own instruments.  The pride just shined on their faces as they played for the first time on their own instrument.  I cannot believe there is an organization out there that is able to do what you've been able to do.  I will thank the friend of mine who posted on her Facebook wall about the instruments you were able to send to some of her students.  Thank you so much!

~Jeri Collins, Band Director, Alice Johnson High School
