"One small gesture can change a life.”
Hugh Masekela
One of the inspirations for Hungry for Music’s outreach efforts is the story of the Karnofsky family, who gave Louis Armstrong the funds to purchase his first horn, a cornet. They were a Jewish family who had emigrated from Lithuania and ran a coal and junk business in New Orleans, where Armstrong began working when he was just seven years old. They fed him, nurtured him, and allowed him to sleep in their home. Armstrong said he learned “how to live, real life and determination” from the Karnofskys. To honor them, he wore a Star of David for most of his adult life.
And Louis paid their love forward many times in his life with his generosity.
Hungry for Music’s Baltimore associate, Joe Compton, likes to tell our musical instrument donors the famous story of Armstrong gifting legendary South African musician Hugh Masekela with a trumpet. British anti-apartheid activist, bandleader, and priest Trevor Huddleston had given Masekela his first horn.
After being exiled from South Africa for his anti-apartheid activities, Huddleston visited the United States and had the opportunity to tell Armstrong about Masekela and his music program. Armstrong responded by giving him one of his trumpets. Masekela said that the trumpet inspired him to embark on a career in music, and he went on to be known as South Africa’s “Father of Jazz.”

At Hungry for Music, our hope is that the gift of music will make a positive difference in the lives of the kids who receive them. Perhaps these gifts will inspire a career in music — but at the very least, a greater appreciation of music.
Your donation on Giving Tuesday and during the giving season will help us create more musicians and music appreciators!
Thank you for helping us make a difference.
Here’s to a harmonious holiday season.
And may you always find comfort with music.

“I've attached the most heart-warming images of our SMF Jazz Academy students enjoying Hungry for Music's very generous donation of two drum kits. The students have been thrilled, and these instruments are making a real difference in their musical development.”

The smile says it all.
“Martha, a 5th grader, is the happy recipient of one of the guitars donated by Hungry for Music! She first learned to play guitar attending KYDS after school and summer programs last year. Martha was a natural and really enjoyed the lessons.
This school year, she was disappointed to find that our guitar teacher had left. Martha’s mother found a scholarship that would allow her to continue guitar lessons in the community but they required that she bring her own guitar, which mom could not afford.

Problem solved thanks to Hungry for Music! To say Martha and her mother were ecstatic at the surprise, is an understatement. She has a little brother who made sure she knew she would be sharing the guitar with him. 😊”

Hungry for Music makes approximately a dozen regional delivery/pick-up trips annually, besides the weekly trips in the DC Metro area. These regional trips allow us to pick up larger donations throughout the United States, such as instrument donation drive collections from service projects.
We are also able to make larger music instrument donations which would have been cost prohibitive to ship. |

We are able to make international donations because of stateside sponsors who handle customs and shipping costs.
Our fourteenth international donation of 2025! Hungry for Music has been supporting Building a Bridge to Uganda since 2016. The van load of instruments will be shipped in a container with other goods and will arrive in Uganda in the spring of next year.

Volunteers Shining Bright

Hungry for Music has volunteers in most major metropolitan areas.
We couldn’t do what we do without their support.
Here are two stars: |
|
|
Hungry for Music has supported Roger Anderson’s music classes since 2009. Now that he is retired, he volunteers for us!
We just picked up a big load from his home in Gilbert, Arizona, including two upright basses, two tubas, five trombones, over a dozen flutes and clarinets! Wow!
