November Newsletter

I would like to express my extreme gratitude to the staff, volunteers, partners, sponsors, and donors that have made this a record-breaking year for Hungry for Music!  During our Title One School instrument request period, we distributed 641 instruments to schools in 36 states and are nearing our top annual total of nearly 1,400.

Hungry for Music was also gifted with an amazing 3,700 ukeleles from Boyd Audio. We have already distributed 1,000 of them, with the help of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT).  More on the ukeleles in the next newsletter.

The implementation of our new inventory tracking software (Fishbowl) this month will streamline many tasks and save our staff valuable time.  We appreciate our Facebook donors and The Peachtree House Foundation for covering the cost of this vital expenditure that will assist us in continuing to expand our mission.

I am so grateful to the D’Addario Foundation, JAMBARs, and the American Federation of Teachers for supporting our chapter set-up project.  Hungry for Music could not do it without their support.

Our end-of-the-year fundraising drive kicks off on Giving Tuesday!  During this giving season, please consider supporting Hungry for Music. Your donation will help with the cost of repairs, distribution, and purchasing new instruments.

Wishing you the best this holiday season.

May You Always Find Comfort in Music,

“We have a thank-you card coming your way, but I also wanted to send you this picture of the three grateful recipients of the viola donations you made to our strings program. Thank you SO MUCH for your support!!”

- Jessye Bartlett, Fiddlehead’s Field Youth Orchestra, New Hampshire

“This is Caden (currently 7th grade). He was ready to quit before he was switched to Euphonium, and his parents are super grateful that he has one to use now for as long as he stays in the program. He is super happy! Thank you again to Hungry for Music.”

- T.K. Rollins, band & orchestra director, Snowflake Intermediate School, AZ

“We can not thank you enough for these instruments! Ja’miyah (left) & Kimberly (right) have been band all-stars. Not pictured is Autumn who will not put down the flute.  Thank you again for your support.”

- Matthew Wall, Telfair County Middle School, Georgia

This Stop, Pittsburgh!

Hungry for Music would like to thank the Pittsburgh Federation of Teachers Office and Union Hall and Pittsburgh Public Schools for recently organizing an awesome event at their Union Hall!

We also appreciate music students from Duquesne and Carnegie Mellon Universities for working the instrument petting zoo!  The kids had a fun time!

This event would not have been possible without the sponsorship and partnership of the AFT - American Federation of Teachers, who gave away a wonderful collection of music-themed books as a part of their Books Open the World Campaign.  A huge hit!

The community get together also featured music performances from kids from all levels of Pittsburgh Public Schools and a quartet made up of talented music teachers.

Such a great time!

Integral Team Members

Meet Cassie and Taylor.  During our school request period, Hungry for Music receives a steady stream of inquiries and Cassie takes care of most all of them.  This means vetting to make sure it’s a legitimate request, which entails making a ton of phone calls and dealing with a constantly expanding email inbox.

With the volume of requests that come through, Cassie really does an amazing job keeping up with it all.  The last couple of years, she handled most all the requests and also boxed most of the shipments.

This year, I promised I would get her some help with boxing, so now Taylor comes in once or twice a week to support with shipping.  It’s great to have his positive energy around and the extra help to get music instrument packages out in a timely manner.

Hungry for Music’s outreach continues to expand because of the awesome support we receive from good folks like Cassie and Taylor.

Donated Vintage Instruments

We are grateful to have received two vintage instruments from donors recently!  A 1936 Martin 0-15 and a 1949 National “New Yorker” electric.

When we receive vintage instruments like these, they are assessed, then sold or auctioned.  The proceeds allow us to purchase instruments for Hungry for Music’s donation program and also help with the cost of distributing instruments.

T-Shirts!

We have a great new assortment of Hungry for Music t-shirts.  They make awesome holiday gifts for the music lovers in your life.
