Partnership Creating Magic in Appalachia
|
|
|
We are grateful for a partnership with Deering Banjo Company and Junior Appalachian Musicians JAM that allowed us to put a Deering Eagle II banjo into the hands of an award-winning and deserving young picker, Nicholas Wingo.
|
|
|
For the last decade, JAM and Hungry for Music have partnered to put instruments into the hands of children. Hungry for Music originally connected with grassroots organizer and musician, Helen White, to distribute the first collection of many acoustic guitars for students participating in Junior Appalachian Musicians after-school programs. Since the first donation of instruments, we have continued this powerful collaboration with JAM to distribute more than 500 guitars, fiddles, banjos, mandolins, dulcimers, autoharps and even a few up-right basses to young players in the four-state region of North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.

Loading Up on Holiday Cheer
for Mid-West and Beyond

In 2019, Hungry for Music’s 25th year, we have donated almost 1,200 music instruments to individuals and groups at school and after-school music programs. We have also supported social workers with clients who have clients who can benefit from music therapy and organizations who ship containers of supplies to other countries. Before the end of the year, Hungry for Music will hand deliver at least another 100 instruments to programs throughout the Mid-West, including stops in Louisville, St. Louis, Chicago, Cleveland, and Detroit.

‘’This is a clip from the dress rehearsal for concert we did earlier this year with our harp student Melissa Maldonado. The harp has changed her life. Melissa is performing with YMF ensembles director Lauren Waynczuk, and YMF Senior Program and Artistic Advisor Vijay Gupta, a 2018 MacArthur "Genius" grant recipient, Senior TED Fellow and founder of Street Symphony. The concert was part of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art's Sundays Live Series and took place at the museum's Bing Theatre in March of this year. This was a culminating moment for Melissa which wouldn't have been possible without Hungry for Music and your magnanimous donor.’’

HFM founder Jeff Campbell was recently in Los Angeles making site visits and to meet with potential partners and existing partners, like Drums for Drummers DFD in Huntington Beach. Tom Stewart, the founder of DFD, has allowed Hungry for Music to store over 100 guitars in his warehouse until we had time to assess and distribute them. Jeff was able to distribute over 50 of the guitars to three separate programs in the Los Angeles area, including Young Musicians Foundation, Guitars Antiqua, and a Grammy Foundation supported program, Rwanda Rocks. Jessica Green’s one-woman crusade to put guitars into the hands of the homeless in her Marin County community were shipped six guitars. Thank you to Hungry for Music friend, Susan Graham, for the use of her vehicle to distribute the guitars.

Meet a Part of the HFM Team

|
It is appropriate that long-time volunteer, Alan Friedman, is the first team member to be introduced in this new installment to the newsletter. Alan has been volunteering with Hungry for Music for almost 15 years, representing us at events and flea markets, as well as picking up instruments, shipping orders, and helping with administrative tasks while Jeff is on the road. Alan’s dedicated support has been invaluable to our mission and we are extremely grateful to have someone who shares our passion and belief in the power of music.

We are grateful to saxophonist, Elijah Woodward, for organizing a benefit concert with his band to support Hungry for Music. Elijah & The Fixins, the Washington, DC-based jazz combo, comprised of students from the famed Duke Ellington School of the Arts held the benefit concert on Sunday, November 10, “Hungry For Music: An Evening of Jazz,” at Rigby’s Jig Dance Studio in Richmond, VA , featuring local jazz favorite, flautist and music educator Glennroy Bailey.

‘’I am not sure if u remember me but last year your program sent my son a trumpet to Louisiana. His name is Lyric and mine is Lynette Thibodeaux. I am proud to report to you that Lyric is doing wonderful. He was selected to audition for our schools musically talented and gifted program. We are now eagerly waiting for his results. He is at the top of his music class. This is his second year marching with our Senior highs marching band as a middle school student. This summer he also participated in 337 all star collegiate brass band. We can thank you enough for the gift of music your program has given him. I have attached a picture of him and the high school band members. They were rucking (performing) on the street corner to make money for their travel suits. With great appreciation. Since becoming a non-profit 25 years ago, Hungry for Music has brought the healing quality of music to more than 13,000 children in 49 states and 30 countries through its musical instrument donation program.
