From the President

The news last week that the federal tax credits for geothermal would not be extended this year was, of course, very disappointing for our members- particularly those in the US. Many organizations and individuals put a lot of time and money into the effort to regain parity with other renewable technologies that had their tax credits extended a year ago. We will continue to work with the other geothermal organizations to see this slight by our legislators reversed. In the meantime, we also need to focus on continuing to improve our designs, installations, technology and marketing. IGSHPA plays an important role in all these areas. This month I want to highlight two important opportunities to improve your trade organization and businesses.

First, an email was sent out last week to IGSHPA members requesting nominations to the Board in two membership categories- GHEX (drillers and loop installers) and Dealer/Contractor. This is the third Board election since the creation of the new bylaws. Our bylaws guarantee that that a percentage of Board seats will change every year. This encourages broader participation and fresh ideas. Please consider volunteering your time and talent to IGSHPA by serving on the Board. If you have an interest in serving, please let us know by email at info@igshpa.org or by calling the IGSHPA office at (800) 626-4747.

Committee Updates

Advocacy Committee
In order to focus resources, the Advocacy Committee has authorized three working groups. The three working groups and designated leader are as follows:
  1. State/Regulatory Organizational Coordination – Cary Smith

As reported within the Committee, there will be no extension of the current Renewable Tax Credit Incentives set to expire this December 31st. Government Funding Bill Passed Without Investment Tax Credit for Geothermal Heat Pumps

On December 6, 2016, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a stopgap spending bill that did not include an extension of the the Investment Tax Credit (Sec. 48) or Residential Energy Efficiency Property Credit (Sec. 25D)

“Geothermal heat pump technology is a critical component for meeting energy efficiency and environmental goals in the U.S.,” said Doug Dougherty, President and CEO of GEO. “In addition, the industry supports tens of thousands American workers with well-paid manufacturing and installation jobs.”

In addition, businesses will no longer be able to use bonus depreciation – a method of expensing half of the cost of purchase with the remaining half depreciated over time – for geothermal heat pump technology, and homeowners who install this efficient heating and cooling technology will see a tax increase.
