Assessment Overview, A letter from the Elementary Principal

9th, September, 2019

Dear Parents,

Assessment of our students’ learning is a continuous process that allows teachers, parents, and students to identify areas of strength and areas that need improvement. Assessment is a daily activity that takes various forms, and is embedded for monitoring the progress of all the five elements of the PYP program (Knowledge, Concepts, Skills, Attitudes, and Action).

As assessment is the key for understanding what was taught and what the student learned, the assessment process involves both Formative and Summative assessments.

Formative Assessment is interwoven with daily learning and helps teachers, parents, and students find out what is known and to identify what needs to be done to further support student learning and growth.

Summative Assessment takes place at the end of a learning unit and is a chance for teachers, parents, and students to evaluate progress based on the student’s ability to demonstrate what they have learned over a period of time.

Assessment of students’ learning uses a variety of different examples of student work and performance tasks within a given unit of inquiry and teachers use a variety of techniques to measure students’ learning, performance, and progress.

As a variety of different assessment methods are used, formative feedback sheets, rubrics, exemplars, checklists, anecdotal notes or continuums, will be sent home on a regular basis in order to allow students and parents to review the learning progress.

Student progress can be monitored by parents on PowerSchool, which is easily accessed via smartphone, tablet or computer.

Over the course of the year parents will also be given the opportunity to attend the Open Day, Teacher-Parents Conferences and Student-Led Conferences. Notifications of these events will be sent at a later date.

Parents and teachers are also given the option to set a meeting time, any time, in order to discuss a student’s progress.  Appointments can be arranged via email through PowerSchool or through the Reception Desk.

The following table will give you an indication of the student's performance on either a formative or summative task.  Please note that we have reduced the descriptors we use from seven to five. We believe these five descriptors will give more clarity about the level achieved by the student.

Written progress reports are sent home twice yearly. At the end of Semester 1 (September to January) and at the end of Semester 2 (February to June).

Measures of Academic Performance (MAP) tests are conducted twice a year in Grades 3 to 5 in English Reading, Mathematics and Science. The data is used to support and improve the students’ mastery of the learning objectives of the PYP.

Learning objectives for each unit are sent to parents in the form of a Unit Overview and a more detailed description of the learning objectives can be found in the Weekly Newsletters.

Wishing you and our students all the best of success for the academic year ahead.

Trudy George

Elementary Principal
