Independent Lives impact report 2023

Our annual impact report highlights the progress we've made toward our strategic objectives, and outline where we're going to focus our work over the following years to achieve our vision of a fairer society where everyone can fulfil their potential.

Every day our staff support disabled people and those with health and social care needs to live their lives independently. Whether providing care and support in someone's home or information and advice over the phone, the work of Independent Lives continues to have a tremendous impact on people's lives.

Our 2023 Impact Report breaks down the support that our individual services provide. For example, last year our care staff provided over 50,000 hours of support to people in their homes, our payroll service processed over 16,000 payrolls and our information and advice team provided support over 7,100 times – all phenomenal achievements.

Enhance your understanding of autism with our comprehensive training courses

At Independent Lives, we are committed to empowering personal assistants and other health and social care workers through education. We are pleased to offer a series of autism training courses designed to enhance understanding and effective communication. These courses cover essential topics such as:

Autism awareness: Dive into the basics of autism, understanding behaviours, and effective engagement strategies.

Alternative communication methods: Learn about non-verbal communication techniques that can significantly aid interactions with autistic individuals.

Managing meltdowns and shutdowns: Gain insights on handling intense emotional reactions, distinguishing between different types of outbursts, and providing appropriate support during these challenging times.

All sessions are conducted by an experienced adviser with specialised knowledge in autism, ensuring that participants receive expert guidance and practical knowledge.

Tyler's Story selected for screening at Brighton Fringe

We're thrilled to announce that our film Tyler’s Story has been selected to be shown as part of Brighton Fringe's Flicks series.

In 2022, Independent Lives launched Tyler’s Story - a short film about disability. Filmed in and around Worthing the film aims to educate people to what it is like to live with a disability. It focuses on the social model of disability and shows that people are disabled by barriers in society and not by their physical or mental impairment.

Tyler's Story follows Tyler as he goes about his life, meeting friends, going to work, the gym and enjoying his hobbies.

The disability strand of Fringe Flicks celebrates shorts from filmmakers who are deaf, disabled, and/or neurodiverse.

The film will be screened at Lewes Depot on Saturday 18 May. The screening begins at 13:30. Tickets are available for £5 at the link below.
