Cost-of-living research findings

After 12-months of work, our research report into the impact of the cost-of-living crisis on disabled people and carers in Sussex is now available.

This crucial research was led by Independent Lives' community researchers Polly Bishop, Cara Redlich, and Gareth Shephard. They conducted surveys and face-to-face interviews with disabled people and carers across Sussex, with invaluable support from the University of Reading and the Scottish Community Development Centre.

Our comprehensive study, funded by NHS Health Education England, paints a stark picture of the challenges faced by this vulnerable group:

  • Disabled people and carers are forced to make impossible choices between heating, eating, and care
  • Limited options are contributing to feelings of being trapped
  • Many individuals are merely surviving, not thriving
  • The crisis is having a devastating impact on mental health.
