Friends of independent Lives membership study released

The first Independent Lives membership study, brings together views and experiences from 52 members of the disability and caring community. The study has been explored in a 28-page report revealing common themes faced by the people Independent Lives support. Members told us about:

- Their frustration with the system
- Their worries about isolation and mental health
- The lack of social opportunities (especially for working age adults)
- Their desire to be treated as an individual
- The difficulties of recruiting and retaining personal assistants

- Independent Lives is reviewing all comments received to inform existing service provision, and potential new services. The organisation will report back to members on activities planned and actions taken.

The findings are also being shared with other health and social care professionals, including representatives from the NHS, to increase understanding and awareness.

Join Independent Lives as a Community researcher

Independent Lives has been funded by NHS Health Education England to undertake community research on the inequalities faced by the disability and caring community because of the cost-of-living crisis.

The community researcher role offers a rewarding opportunity to help connect with disabled people and carers in the south-east, record views and share findings that will help inform NHS and Independent Lives services and Integrated Care Boards.

The community researcher will have lived experience of disability or as a carer and will benefit from Independent Lives and NHS training and mentoring to support them to carry out their activities.

The closing date for applications is 12 noon on Monday 15 May.

Postcards from Disability Pride Worthing

Independent Lives will be working with Adur and Worthing Trust to develop a creative project which will help to promote disability awareness while promoting creativity within Adur and Worthing.

We’re looking for ten people with lived experience of disability to participate in a free creative writing workshop this June. Your writing will feature on a postcard, created in collaboration with local designers, as part of Disability Pride Month.

The postcards will be available to collect in-and-around Worthing, and available to order by post on the Independent Lives website, throughout July.

Help us create a community hub - by taking on the Drop 360

Join us in an exciting endeavor to create a vibrant community hub! We're embarking on a mission to establish a welcoming space where disabled individuals can come together, connect, learn, and share their remarkable stories.

Our aim is to empower them to forge strong bonds, acquire valuable skills, and provide mutual support, ultimately enabling them to lead independent lives.

In order to make this vision a reality, we're launching a fundraising campaign that involves an awe-inspiring event known as Drop 360. Imagine taking a daring leap of faith from the towering heights of Brighton i360, standing tall at a staggering 160 meters.

It's an adrenaline-pumping challenge that promises to leave an indelible mark on your memory.

Mark your calendars for the unforgettable evening of June 13 and join our brave supporters who have fearlessly embraced the Drop 360.

We still have a few spots available, so if you're up for a truly unforgettable experience that will test your mettle, don't hesitate to reach out and be a part of this incredible journey.
