Jnan Panchmi Parva
Saturday, October 29

Tomorrow, 10/29, is Jnän Panchami, a day of worship of pure knowledge.  Jain religion stresses its importance because knowledge is an innate quality of the soul.  Only through right knowledge can one follow the right path to liberation.

On this day, the scriptures, that impart knowledge to people, are worshipped with devotion and by offering Väsakshep (sandalwood powder). Jains worship these sacred scriptures to seek blessings to attain the ability to learn continuously. Efforts and prayers are focused towards getting rid of Jnänävarniya Karma.

The Kayotsarga of 51 Logassa, 51 Swastikas, 51 Khamasanas and 20 Navkarvalis of Jaap Pad of `Om Rhim Namo Naanassa` are performed on this day.

What can we do at the minimum on Jnan Panchami?

  • 5 Khamasamanas at minimum (ideal is 51) - see link for more details
  • 5 Logassa Kausagga (ideal is 51)
  • 5 Navkarvalis / Rosary Beads (ideal 20) - "Om Rhim Namo Naanassa"
  • Any Tapa such as Upvaas, Ayambil, Ekasana, etc.

What are the 5 types of knowledge?

  • Matigyan: Knowledge obtained through mind and senses. This is known as an indirect knowledge because the soul acquires this knowledge through the body.
  • Srutagyan: Knowledge obtained through signs, symbols, words, hearing from the wise, and reading scriptures. This is also known as indirect knowledge because the soul acquires this knowledge via words, scriptures etc.
  • Avadhigyan: Clairvoyance: Direct knowledge of matter (corporeal things) without the means of the mind and senses. A person visualizes the past, present and future forms of the corporeal things within some limit of space and time.. It is a kind of spiritual knowledge or extra sensory perception.
  • Manahparyagyan: Telepathy Direct knowledge of thoughts of other living beings within a certain limit of space and time without the means of mind and senses.
  • Kevalgyan: Omniscience This knowledge completely reveals without the aid of senses and mind, the truth of all substances, corporeal or non-corporeal, past, present, and future of the whole universe. The Tirthankaras and Arihants are such persons possessing Kevaljnana - capable of knowing all and seeing all.
