New tax-free shopping system from November 2026 

 

From 1 November 2026, the tax-free shopping system in Japan will change to a refund-based model. Travellers will pay consumption tax at the time of purchase and will need to complete customs procedures before checking in luggage and clearing security when departing Japan. If you are planning to claim a refund, be sure to allow extra time at the airport. For more information, refer to the official leaflet or the Japan Tourism Agency website.
