Oirase Gorge in Aomori Prefecture has long inspired painters and poets. Surrounded by lush greenery, shaded paths and flowing water, it offers a refreshing escape in summer.

Hi ,

Welcome to the June and July edition of the Japan Travel News Updates.

The first half of summer marks the arrival of tsuyu, Japan’s rainy season, when many regions see more frequent rainfall. While it’s worth being prepared, it doesn’t necessarily rain every day, and the misty conditions can bring an atmospheric charm to landscapes and natural surroundings. Okinawa experiences the season earlier, while Hokkaido remains relatively unaffected, making it a popular destination at this time of year.

Summer also brings its own seasonal highlights, from fireflies illuminating balmy evenings to lush landscapes and vibrant hydrangea brightening parks, temples and gardens across the country.

In this edition, discover unique new stays, explore sustainable travel inspiration in our latest brochure, and find helpful information to prepare for your next visit.

Travel News, Inspiration and Updates

New e-brochure: Sustainable travel experiences in Japan

Discover Japan in more depth with our new brochure, featuring 36 destinations across the country leading the way in sustainable tourism. Grouped into five themes – nature and outdoors, heritage and tradition, experiences and activities, wellness and relaxation, and local life – the guide offers fresh inspiration for exploring Japan more consciously.

The newly renovated visitor facility in northern Akita Prefecture offers a gateway to the UNESCO-listed Shirakami Sanchi, home to one of Japan’s largest pristine beech forests. Featuring interactive exhibits, multilingual audio guides and on-site nature advisors, the centre provides valuable context and insights before exploring the surrounding natural landscapes.

Explore a deeper side of Hokkaido with local guides

Hokkaido has released two videos highlighting how local guides can enrich your trip – uncovering hidden stories, sharing unique insights and creating more personalised experiences. Follow two travellers, one exploring Daisetsuzan National Park and the other Sapporo, as they compare travelling with and without a guide, and find out how to make the most of your next visit.

Cerulean Tower Tokyu Hotel in Shibuya features recently renovated Comfort Floor rooms, designed with a focus on functionality and comfort. Guests can also make use of the Hospitality Room before or after their stay. Throughout the year, the hotel offers a range of seasonal cultural experiences, including yukata in summer, as well as tea ceremony and traditional games during the New Year period.

Experience the theatrical tradition of Noh outdoors on Sado Island, where Zeami – the master who refined the art – was once exiled. Performances take place across shrine stages from June to October, with a relaxed atmosphere and select shows illuminated by crackling bonfires. See the 2026 schedule for more details.

Change to international tourist tax from July

From 1 July 2026, Japan’s international tourist tax will increase to 3,000 yen. The tax is generally collected by airlines and cruise providers upon departure and is typically included in the ticket price. The revenue will contribute to enhancing visitor experiences and supporting the preservation of the country’s natural environments, historical sites and cultural heritage for generations to come.

Update to power bank regulations on flights

From April 2026, passengers will no longer be able to use power banks to charge phones or other electronic devices during flights. A limit of two power banks per person will also apply. Existing rules, such as keeping power banks out of checked luggage and not storing them in overhead compartments, will continue to apply.
