New tax-free shopping system from November 2026 

From 1 November 2026, Japan’s tax-free shopping system will change to a refund-based model. Travellers will pay consumption tax at the time of purchase and claim refunds before departure. Clients may need to allow extra time at the airport as the required customs must be completed before checked luggage is handed over and prior to clearing security.
