Insider Tip
#22: Smoking & Non-smoking Areas
As of April 2020, Japan has revamped a lot of its cigarette smoking laws. This included an indoor smoking ban with only cigar bars, private homes, and designated smoking rooms and areas exempt. Smoking on the street is also banned except in designated areas which you will come across in cities.
That said, there are still accommodation properties in Japan that may have smoking and non-smoking rooms, especially in regional areas or older properties. Although it is becoming more and more uncommon, it is best to double-check with the property when booking.
Some restaurants, cafes, and bars have designated smoking areas. You may be asked whether you prefer “smoking” (kitsu-en) or “non-smoking” (kin-en) seats upon entering the facility. The phrase "no smoking" will get your point across, but if you want to impress, learn the phrase "kin-en" (smoking prohibited) to voice your request.

Japan has an abundance of glamping opportunities where visitors can enjoy all the creature comforts of a hotel while getting close to nature. Just a few glamping highlights include Tadayoi in the Oki Islands, or Glamp Ocean in Ise-shima National Park.
