TCF is partnering for the Golden Mahseer Survey initiated by Ramnagar Forest Division in collaboration with the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) and WWF-India. Golden Mahseer, a threatened species of fish is an inhabitant of rivers of Himalayan foothills. It is found in River Kosi flowing at the outskirts of Corbett Tiger Reserve, Uttarakhand. Pre-monsoon data has been collected and presently post-monsoon data is being gathered. The objective of the survey is to find and develop baseline information on Mahseer and other fish fauna of River Kosi that would help in the long term conservation of Mahseer.

A mission that started in 2016-17, to save crops and wild elephants by reducing Human-Elephant conflict, continues with the addition of new project sites at Bongali village, Sapjuri in Kaziranga. TCF distributed material for 11 tongis and rechargeable solar powered flashlights to the communities from these villages. Villagers will construct the Togis, which are mini watch towers, to guard the crops from raids of wild elephants. Villagers contribute labor as well as material like bamboo posts which creates sense of ownership. This project is supported by Hem Chand Mahindra Foundation. This initiative has saved almost 100% of the crops with no injuries to elephants and villagers.

Villagers in and around Kanha Tiger Reserve (KTR) use bio-fencing to protect and demarcate their houses and backyard gardens. To construct theses fences, they cut saplings and trees on a large scale from the nearby forests and buffer zone of KTR. This exerts severe pressure on forests ultimately affecting the quality of wildlife habitats. As a solution to this, TCF proposed replacement of bio-fence with permanent metal chain-link fence to the villagers of Baherakhar, The suggestion was well received by the villagers and recently TCF installed chain-link fencing of total 5.5 Kms in Baherakhar, protecting backyards of the houses. Villagers were happy to construct this less maintenance and less hardship version of fences and contributed to the work through labour.
This gives a hope to more than 50,000 saplings to grow into trees, a year!

Forest guards are foremost amongst the many heroes of wildlife conservation. To enhance their skills and to set them more competent, TCF and Jet Privilege Pvt Ltd (JPPL), under a joint project ‘Preserving what’s Precious’, organized a day’s workshop for these foot soldiers. It covered field staff of Khannaudi, Paudi, Ankuri and Sanna circles and workshop was attended by 78 participants of Bandhavgarh-Sanjay Dubri corridor area. The workshop was conducted by TCF’s field team comprising of Dr. Sharad Kumar, Kimmi Singh and Tahir Ali Rather.
The topics included ‘sharing knowledge on basic and ecological field techniques-interpreting indirect signs of wildlife, transect walk techniques, handling wildlife encounters during field work, first-aid administration with emergency response to victims of wildlife conflict and anti-poaching measures’. In field sessions, the participants were trained to lay transects, use laser range finder and to set up the camera traps, letting them individually handle all the instruments.

A celebration packed Wildlife Week (2nd – 9th October 2018) at five divisions of TCF received an overwhelming response from community, students, teachers and forest authorities.
Various initiatives like gifting torches to members of Vanchachar Forest Committee and awareness programs (Bandhavgarh), drawing competitions and free medical check-up camps for women (Corbett), solar light distribution in Dhanijor (Kanha Tiger Reserve core villages), quiz competitions and nature trails (Tokawade range, Maharashtra), training program for the first birdrace (Kutch), awareness programs about challenges and threats to biodiversity (Kaziranga) and many more activities made every day of Wildlife Week, live, colorful and most meaningful!

In continuation with its legacy to work closely with the local communities, TCF – Kaziranga has designed a Conservation Education Project supported by Hem Chand Mahindra Foundation. The project will be executed in 32 villages in the vicinity of Kaziranga, identified by TCF and Kaziranga Ntional Park authority based on the need assessment. The project is multifold encompassing various objectives like mitigation of human-wildlife conflict, reducing wildlife mortality or killing, control of disease spread from livestock to wild animals, flood preparedness and awareness for compensations.
The project will help sustain coexistence of human and wildlife in a long run.
