Stop Slaughtering Wildlife
Prevent The Next Pandemic
The 'Stop Slaughtering Wildlife - Prevent the Next Pandemic' campaign initiated by Sanctuary Nature Foundation and The Corbett Foundation is a long-term project aimed towards the prevention of the next pandemic. Till date, 100+ nature lovers have helped us raise more than INR 14,50,000...

ABOUT THE CAMPAIGN ...

COVID-19 originated from wild animals, possibly bats, then ‘spilled over’ to humans through an intermediate animal host, possibly pangolins. Both these animals are in high demand as food and in wildlife trade in China, other southeast Asian countries and also India. Pangolins, one of the most trafficed animals of the world, are under severe threat in India too. They are killed for their scales and trapped to be supplied in markets across the world including Wuhan, China. The illegal trade in wild species is also devastating forest communities, whose ancient ecosystems are vanishing. The expertise of such victim communities is exploited by wildlife traders who take advantage of communities’ survival dependency on the natural resources. The primary victims of this ruthless targeting of wild species and ecosystems are therefore local forest communities. On a global scale this destruction is destabilising Earth’s climate. This triggers the migration of host species, with viruses in tow, into human habitation.

Wet markets, in particular, create unhygienic conditions where wild species are stuffed into closed, cramped conditions that intensify the risk of pathogen transfers through saliva, blood, urine, mucous, feces, and other body fluids. Spillovers also take place from bites and scratches and from vectors such as mosquitoes and fleas. Consuming the flesh of wild species, or eating food and water contaminated by them is literally inviting trouble. Even before we are able to deal with COVID-19, virus hunters warn that several more viruses could be unleashed at the hands of human folly.

‘Prevention is better than cure’ is a proverb for our times. To cut our chances of being struck by more spillovers, a global war on the illegal trade in wild species must be declared. It is for this reason that the Sanctuary Nature Foundation and The Corbett Foundation have launched the Stop Slaughtering Wildlife’ – Prevent the Next Pandemic initiative in association with  Ketto.

We would be working with the ethnic communities in the following areas to create respectable, sustainable livelihoods whose collateral benefits include biodiversity renewal.

1. Dailong village in Tamenglong, Manipur
2. Khara village, nestled deep in the forests of Kanha-Pench Corridor, Madhya Pradesh.

3. A Karbi village along the foothills of Karbi-Anglong Hills, Assam
4. Panna Tiger Reserve, Madhya Pradesh
