HIGHLAND CONSTRUCTION IN KAZIRANGA

TCF has begun construction of another highland, community weaving centre and livestock shed in Diphloopathar – a village bordering the eastern range of Kaziranga National Park and severely affected by the annual monsoon floods and human-elephant conflict. Following the success of this disaster-preparedness measure in Japoripathar in Kaziranga last monsoon, villagers and Gram Panchayat members volunteered to work with TCF to complete construction before the first monsoon showers hit Kaziranga. With the earth having been raised, the construction of the weaving centre and shed is now in progress, and 50 trees will also be planted and protected by tree guards. Chairman and founder of TCF Mr. Dilip Khatau visited the highland site and appreciated its scope as a refuge structure and the effort contributed to its construction. This flood-preparedness measure is supported generously by Hem Chand Mahindra Foundation.

MARKET LINKAGES FOR PUKAAR BENEFICIARIES IN KAZIRANGA

Women from the rural community in Kaziranga, Assam have been weaving cloth traditionally for many years. Recently, TCF has been imparting training to the women in weaving modern designs and patterns in an attempt to boost their sale. One such group of women in the remotely located village of Japoripathar have had throngs of western tourists visiting the village to purchase hand-woven cloth articles, giving the sale of traditionally woven cloth a much needed boost. TCF has been developing market linkages for the products made by rural women by appealing to local hotels, resorts and tour operators to connect their tourists with the community weaving centres that TCF has constructed in the Kaziranga landscape. This intervention of TCF supports its alternative livelihood programme titled PUKAAR, funded by Axis Bank Foundation.
