ANNOUNCEMENTS
CELEBRATION OF REPAIRS
Sat., Aug. 10

On Saturday, August 10, the Board will provide bagels and lox to celebrate the completion of the repairs to our building.  If you have not seen our new and improved sanctuary, August 10 would be the perfect time to come.  Our sanctuary is freshly painted, has new carpeting, and is actually a little bigger.  This is because the unsightly defunct heat registers have been removed.  The landscaping in the front has been upgraded as well.  Help us celebrate our resilience, as we made "lemonade" out of the "lemon" that was handed to us.  Kohelet will supply the main dish for our kiddish luncheon, but your additions of salads and desserts will be greatly appreciated.
TISHA B'AV
Sat., Aug. 10 at 9:00 p.m.

Please join  Kohelet for our annual evening  Tisha B’Av observance after  Shabbat on August 10 at 9:00 p.m.  We will invite discussion and chant and read  Echa in candle light.  This always is a meaningful and enlightening event.  One theme we might explore comes from Rabbi Jonathan Sacks:  Is there a difference between thinking about our Jewish past as history or as memories?  Can we handle the events as actual, palpable memories intellectually and emotionally?  If so, how?

No need to RSVP; just come and participate.

THOUGHTS ON LAST WEEK'S DVAR

After a very insightful and spirited dvar this Shabbat at Kohelet --by Elazar Hirsch, a Kohelet grad. —which included a lively discussion, I came across an article I had saved that addresses many of the issues raised: https://www.wsj.com/articles/good-schools-arent-the-secret-to-israels-high-tech-boom-1490051053  Good Schools Aren’t the Secret to Israel’s High Tech Boom, March 20, 2017.

If you have trouble accessing this article, let me know and I can email it to you.

AN UPDATE ABOUT JANET BRANDT AND ARIEL

Dear Kohelet Friends,

It's amazing to realize that mom has been in MD for a little over seven months now!  It's been a busy spring and early summer as we welcomed our third child, Janet's third grandchild on June 1.  Maayan Lene has been a joy, and my maternity leave has afforded us extra time to spend with mom.  Mom is settled into a routine and seems to be well adjusted to her new home.  In the warmer weather, we go out for walks with the big kids on their scooters and mom pushes Maayan in the stroller.  I've included some recent pictures, mostly of mom with Maayan, and a few with me.

If any of you would like to write to mom, she enjoys getting mail and frequently leafs through the beautiful cards she's received so far.  You can write to her directly:

Mom also loves receiving visitors, if you find yourself in the DC (or Baltimore) area with some free time I am more than happy to facilitate a visit. As always, please feel free to email me: ariel@brandtlautman.com
