Each evening will start with a very brief introduction, then the movie (usually about an hour in length), followed by a 15 minute group discussion.
Refreshments will be served.
Please save the dates.
Our committee (Joan B., Neiel B., Ed D.) welcomes your communication at any time.

Opening night: April 2, 7:00 p.m.  Making a Killing. Joan B. will introduce.
Making a Killing is a compelling detective story about one family's 50 year quest to recover their missing art collection, set against a background of murder, greed and corruption.  In 1943, Friedrich and Louise Gutmann, members of a prominent German-Jewish banking family, refused to sign over their valuable collection to the Nazis.  They were sent to the Theresienstadt concentration camp, interrogated and murdered.  Their house was stripped bare.  After the war, the Gutmanns' children, Lili and Bernard searched unsuccessfully for their stolen art.  In 1994, Bernard's sons took up the mission, joined by art hunter Willi Korte.  The story culminates in the discovery of a stolen Degas painting and the controversial legal battle to reclaim it, revealing the complicity of the international art world, dealers, auction houses, curators, and museums in the trader and acquisition of Nazi plunder.

May 7, 7:00 p.m.  The Return of the Violin.  Tom Berl will introduce.
A young Jewish boy [Bronislaw Huberman] from Czestochowa, Poland, plays the violin with such virtuosity that a nobleman makes him a gift of a priceless Stradivarius, which he uses to bedazzle the composter Johannes Brahms.  This violin is stolen later.  The man flees Europe for Palestine, founds the national orchestra, and helps rescue hundreds of Jewish musicians from Naziism.  After his death the violin resurfaces.  An amazing story and a magnificient movie.
MARK YOUR CALENDARS!
