ANNOUNCEMENTS

BEST PRACTICES FOR COMMUNITY SAFETY

On May 14 I attended a webinar given by the ADL/SCN entitled Anti-Semitism Today and Best Practices for Community Security. The ADL tracks three categories of anti-semitic incidents: harrassment, damage to property, and physical assault. Sadly, there has been a significant upsurge in all three categories since 2016. Physical security must be given top priority in all Jewish institutions. What were their recommendations, and where is Kohelet along the journey?

One recommendation was to secure the front entrance. Without exception, shooters who have entered churches, synagogues, or mosques have enter through the main door. We have done that. Another recommendation was to have surveillance cameras strategically located. We have done that as well.

Recommended also was a security committee, a specific plan should an active shooter enter, and practice drills. We are not there yet with this one. This is something we will discuss at upcoming board meetings. Our top priority it to keep Kohelet safe.

TONIGHT: “A LIGHTHEARTED LAG BaOMER” CONCERT
Wed., May 22 7:30 p.m.

On Erev Lag B’Omer, Wednesday evening, May 22, six Denver Jewish women musicians will offer “A Lighthearted Lag BaOmer”, a concert with a cause. The free event, which will be for ladies and teen girls only, will take place at Congregation Kohelet, 428 South Forest at 7:30 p.m.

The program will launch the Lag B’Omer holiday with social gathering and singing. After a light dessert (kosher dietary laws strictly observed), event organizer Chaya Sarah Tene will present a multimedia presentation about Eitam Farm, a program for emotionally troubled youth in Israel for which the concert will be fundraising. An $18 or more tax-deductible donation to Eitam Farm is respectfully suggested.

The musical program, which will begin at sundown, will interweave comments on the mystical and historic significance of the Lag BaOmer holiday with musical performances and singing. The lineup of local performers includes Chaya Sarah Tene, Beckie (Rivka) Cohen, Yocheved Makowitz, Randy Weiss, and Vered and Arwin Barrack.

For further Information, call 720-309-8276. Reservations not required. Just come and enjoy!

SHABBAT TO HONOR OUR YOUTH
June 1

On Saturday, June 1, we will have a special Shabbat to honor our youth. We will feature extra good, kid-friendly food, and hopefully some of our Kohelet kids will participate in the service. Many of our kids are transitioning to a major milestone, and all of them are at least transitioning from one grade to the next, so let's honor them on this occasion.
