Mental Illness Awareness Week Oct. 2-8
Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW) was established by U.S. Congress in recognition of efforts by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) to educate and increase awareness about mental illness. During MIAW, mental health advocates and organizations will sponsor events to promote community outreach concerning mental health. On Oct. 6, National Depression Screening Day, a free mental health screening can be obtained.
Number Uninsured in U.S. 4 Million Lower
The number of U.S. 'uninsureds' declined by 4 million in 2015, two years after major insurance reforms of the Affordable Care Act, per a new U.S. Census Bureau survey of 94,000 adults. Using Current Population Survey (CPS) data, 9.1% of the population, or 29 million, were uninsured in 2015, down from 13.3% in 2013. Uninsured rates declined across all age groups, with those 19–25 experiencing the largest 1-year drop. Report here

The Children's Defense Fund Factsheets provide basic statistics regarding child poverty, health and hunger, child welfare, early childhood development and education, and youth at risk. Key data is presented in a uniform format to see how each state ranks here  
AMA Physician Workforce Data Mapper
The AMA Health Workforce Mapper may be used to distinguish high-priority areas for workforce expansion. With this tool, users can determine the geographic location and distribution of physicians throughout the U.S. and identify potential need for certain medical specialties. Review  here
Opioid & All Drug Overdose Deaths
The Kaiser Family Foundation offers analysis of each state - via table, map and trend graph - of opioid overdose deaths, all drug overdose deaths, and opioid overdose deaths as a percent of all drug overdose deaths. Review  here
HHS Report to Congress: E-health/Telemedicine
The report provides an update on e-health and telehealth, represented as of particular value in rural areas, due to lower access to medical specialties, and of positive use with chronic disease management. Types of technologies are reviewed, as well as policy challenges. Review  here  The Telehealth Advisory Council was created to make recommendations intended to increase the use and accessibility of services provided via telehealth. Transportation Program for Rural Veterans
To help rural Veterans access care, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs expanded Veterans Transportation Services to more than 80 rural communities nationwide. The expanded transportation program features mobility managers at VA medical centers who coordinate free transportation to and from VA-authorized medical care. Access here
