Saluting Eric M Roberts, AIA

From time to time "The Credential" spotlights A/E/LA professionals who excel. This month we tell the story of Eric M Roberts, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP, Principal, President and CEO of SH Architecture, as an example of someone who best incorporates a balance between family, community and a successful career. Today we follow his life journey for the past 15 years.

Leadership and deep commitment to community and profession describes Eric M Roberts perfectly. Now CEO, President and Principal at SH Architecture, Las Vegas, Nevada Roberts has been a catalyst for change since his student days. Eric graduated from the University of Idaho in 2005 with a Masters in Architecture. He emerged as a leader when he became President of the University of Idaho's AIAS chapter, where he was recognized with the Alpha Rho Chi Medal for attaining the highest levels of architectural achievement and leadership.

"The best advice I ever received growing up was from my Grandpa," he told
The Credential recently. "I learned from my Grandpa at a young age that idleness and 'taking an off year' were not options for me. He made sure I understood working was a reward and a pleasure. I learned, no matter the task or the hours it takes, it is a pleasure because I chose it. In fact, I choose it every morning."

Developing leadership traits and habits can be difficult for young architects as they try to balance licensure, advancement in a firm and volunteerism. Couple these efforts with the demands of family, church and social life and the task can become overwhelming for a young design professional. Eric navigated these rough waters successfully.

Eric has served for years as a Sunday school teacher for his church and has also donated time as a local Cub Scout Leader. Eric is also a respected local Little League and youth baseball coach and has lead multiple teams to Nevada State Baseball Championship games. He has been happily married for almost 22 years and has 5 children.

Since achieving licensure in 2010, Roberts has championed the AIA and served on various committees. He was elected President of AIA Las Vegas in 2013 and, a year later, President of AIA Nevada. As AIA State Government Network Representative, a role he held for six years, he shared his considerable knowledge of practice law with representatives from AIA chapters across the country.
Eric has also made a commitment and solid investment in the future of the profession through his outreach efforts to youth education programs that teach design and construction principles at a young age. He has been an annual mentor for the AIA High School Design Awards program for over 8 years. Through his efforts with the high school students he has been able to work with over 1,000 students in the last 8 years and introduce them to basic design concepts and principles.

Another creative vision of Eric's included a way to engage architects through their love of sketching...and get more exposure out of his own sketchbooks - Roberts founded Urban Sketchers Las Vegas in 2013. The group, which now includes more than 30 regular members from all walks of life and varying levels of artistic ability, meets regularly for sketch crawls throughout the community. With Urban Sketchers, Roberts has created an environment where accomplished architects, elementary school students, and members of the police department are comfortable creating alongside one another. In many circles he is now recognized as rapidly for his sketches as much as he is for his architecture.

Though he is still a young architect, his exemplary contributions to the profession and commuity were recognized in 2015 with the AIA Nevada Silver Medal, the highest recognition that can be bestowed upon an architect in Nevada, and the AIA Service Award. Roberts is the only member in the chapter's history to receive both awards in the same year.

In June of this year, Eric was recognized nationally by the AIA with a 2019 Young Architect Award. This award honors individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership and made significant contributions to the architecture profession early in their careers. Eric was very excited to receive this award at the AIA National Convention in his hometown of Las Vegas.
In what he would call his "30 seconds of real fame", Eric was chosen to be part of the remodel of the Scott Brothers property and the 4-part television special called "Property Brothers at Home" which continues to air nationally on HGTV.
Another personal question we posed to Eric was - What lesson have you learned in life? "I have learned that success is generally built on a series of lessons or failures. If we find the courage and energy to continue the pursuit of our goals, even after the first, second or third failure, that is often when that success reveals itself."
