Artificial Intelligence In The Built Environment:  What Does It All Mean?

The third week in February each year the professional engineering community celebrates advancements and achievements to the built environment. Congratulations ladies and gentlemen as we celebrate 72 years of National Engineers Week 2024.

This month The Credential offers a topic for discussion - AI. Jeff Holmes, PE, CSI, CDT, HolmesCO, Inc.,  jeff@HolmesCoInc.com, a Professional Software Engineer is a senior professional business advisor and close confidant to LS Credentialing Services, LLC for the past 15 years is providing our first guest article about AI.

We will be featuring additional guest articles about AI and the built environment professionals in the next six months.  We encourage your feedback, please email us with your comments or questions to Lexi@AECredentialing.com.
The year was 1988. As a graduating senior in computer science at Texas A&M, I took a class on the obscure topic of Artificial Intelligence (AI). I viewed this as the pinnacle of my computer science journey. All my previous coursework led up to this. The thought of programming machines that would learn and thrive brought shivers up my spine. We were taught that AI was both an art and a science as it combined mathematical theorems, logical assertions, heuristic rules and other wonderful terms into a glorious machine that would help shape our world.
Now, let's fast forward to 2024 where AI is the hot marketing term. Buy our cell phone because it uses AI to make your photos better. Drive this car because AI was used to design the wheels. The list goes on and on. The engineer in me screams "no", but the marketing manager in me says "well done." I never imagined that such a technological advancement would one day be used to sell toothbrushes. Yes, some manufacturers are even touting an AI toothbrush to improve your smile.
So, what does AI look like in the built environment? I attended an Amazon webinar in 2023 where they used the term "pragmatic AI." This is a good start for how AI can benefit the built environment. In the construction arena, pragmatic would be aiding in design decisions, identifying cost opportunities, and improving quality. AI can help in all of these areas as the software accesses huge amounts of data, iterates through thousands of options in seconds, and frees the designer up from many tedious tasks. Those are huge wins for the design community.
Why are the AI advancements now just emerging since AI has been a topic of the computer science for decades? The advancement of the systems that today's software is run on is the real enabler. Data access and processing power have enabled these systems to generate information at the click of a button or, in some cases, with the sound of your voice.
Will AI eliminate the need for professional humans such as architects, engineers, doctors or teachers? That is the question that deserves some thought but do not lose any sleep over it. Remember the term pragmatic in relation to AI. As we become more accustomed to AI usage in optimizing designs, generating documentation, etc., it will become more apparent that this is just another tool. And with any tool, craftsmen will be needed to correctly wield it.
Artificial Intelligence is a topic that covers a vast array of ideas. In the built environment, it could be described as an advancement in the design tools that further frees the designer up from the mundane and allows them to focus on the creative. Allow the software to pull historical weather data, geographical information, and a number of other parameters while you focus on designing. Embrace these advancements. They are intended to increase your productivity and possibly improve your smile.
Who was the first black mechanical engineer?

Granville Tailer Woods (April 23, 1856 – January 30, 1910) was an American inventor who held more than 50 patents in the United States. He was the first African American mechanical and electrical engineer after the Civil War. Self-taught, he concentrated most of his work on trains and streetcars. One of his inventions is the Synchronous Multiplex Railway Telegraph, a variation of the induction telegraph that relied on ambient static electricity from existing telegraph lines to send messages between train stations and moving trains.
