Womens History Month 2026

This month we feature women of all races,  color, disabilities, education challenges and more who have achieved amazing feats in their accomplishments and creativity. We believe you will be inspired and truly in awe, too.
Mary Golda Ross -
August 19, 1908 – April 29, 2008
A Cherokee and American aerospace engineer. She worked at the Lockheed Corporation from 1942 until her retirement in 1973, where she was best remembered for her work on aerospace design. She was one of the 40 founding engineers of the renowned and highly secretive Skunk Works project while at Lockheed Corporation. Ten years after her death, in 2018, Ross was chosen to be depicted on the 2019 Native American $1 Coin by the U.S. Mint celebrating Native Americans in the space program.

Mary G. Ross was born in the small town of Park Hill, Oklahoma, the second of five children of William Wallace Ross Jr and Mary Henrietta Moore Ross. She was the great-granddaughter of the Cherokee Chief John Ross. John Ross was influential in the creation of the new settlement in Oklahoma following the removal of Native Americans from their land under Andrew Jackson. This settlement for the Cherokee Nation was complete with a school and government.

She was sent to live with her grandparents in the Cherokee Nation capital of Tahlequah, Oklahoma, to attend primary and secondary school. When she was 16, Ross enrolled in Northeastern State Teachers' College in Tahlequah.

Ross received her master's degree in mathematics from University of Northern Colorado, in Greeley. While obtaining her Master's, Ross still took as many astronomy classes as were offered to satisfy her intense fascination with space.

In 1949, after World War II, Lockheed sent Mary G. Ross to the University of California, Los Angeles to study further. While at UCLA, she was able to obtain a professional certification in engineering. Ross was the first Native American woman to obtain this certification.
Margaret Elaine Hamilton - August 17, 1936
An American computer scientist. She directed the Software Engineering Division at the MIT Instrumentation Laboratory, where she led the development of the on-board flight software for NASA's Apollo Guidance Computer for the Apollo program. She later founded two software companies, Higher Order Software in 1976 and Hamilton Technologies in 1986, both in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She coined the term " software engineering", stating, "I began to use the term 'software engineering' to distinguish it from hardware and other kinds of engineering, yet treat each type of engineering as part of the overall systems engineering process.

On November 22, 2016, Hamilton received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from president Barack Obama for her work leading to the development of on-board flight software for NASA's Apollo Moon missions.

She studied mathematics at the University of Michigan in 1955 before transferring to Earlham College, where her mother had been a student. She earned a BA in mathematics with a minor in philosophy in 1958.
Ellen Ochoa - May 10, 1958

An American engineer, former astronaut and former director of the Johnson Space Center. In 1993, Ochoa became the first Latina to go to space when she served on a nine-day mission aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery. Ochoa became director of the center upon the retirement of the previous director, Michael Coats, on December 31, 2012. She was the first Latina director and the second female director of Johnson Space Center.

Ellen Lauri Ochoa was born in Los Angeles, California, to Joseph and Rosanne (née Deardorff) Ochoa. Her paternal grandparents immigrated from Sonora, Mexico, to Arizona and later to California where her father was born. She grew up in La Mesa, California. Ochoa was the middle child of five and neither parent had college degrees.

Ochoa received a Bachelor of Science degree in physics from San Diego State University and graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1980, before earning a Master of Science degree and a doctorate from Stanford Department of Electrical Engineering in 1981 and 1985.

Wanda Díaz-Merced - approx 1982
Diaz-Merced is a Puerto Rican astronomer known for using sonification to turn large data sets into audible sound. Formerly at the European Gravitational Observatory CascinaItaly, Díaz-Merced is currently the Director of the Arecibo C3 STEM Education Center. While losing her eyesight, Díaz-Merced brought attention to increasing equality of access to astronomy and using audible sound to study astrophysical data..
Díaz-Merced uses the process of sonification to convert data from a telescope into sound. She then listens to these data and recognizes patterns. For Díaz-Merced, there are even some patterns that she finds easier to identify by listening than by seeing, which allows her to bring an exciting new perspective to her field.

Díaz-Merced attended Matías González García Middle School and Dra. Conchita Cuevas High School in Gurabo, Puerto Rico. She then went on to study physics at the University of Puerto Rico. She received an internship with Robert Candey at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, USA after she finished her undergraduate degree. She went on to receive a doctorate in computer science from the University of Glasgow in 2013, where she studied space data analysis. She was then accepted as a post-doctoral fellow at the Center for Astrophysics Harvard & Smithsonian and South African Astronomical Observatory in Cape Town.

Merritt Moore - February 24, 1988

An American ballerina and quantum physics researcher. Her artistic work incorporates science and dance through the use of robots.

Merritt Moore was born in Los Angeles, California  to Alice Chu-Hoon Moore (Korean) and Schuyler Moore (American). She also has a sister. Gymnastics was the first sport Moore was involved in growing up. Later, Moore discovered a love for mathematics and dance. Moore began dancing at thirteen years of age. When she was fifteen, she traveled to Viterbo, Italy, where she met Irina Rosca, who had been a professional dancer at the National Ballet of Romania. Moore trained with Rosca during her time in Italy and, when she studied at Harvard, she joined the student-run dance group, where she was trained with professional dancers Damian Woetzel and Heather Watts.

Merritt Moore attended Harvard University and majored in physics. While at Harvard, she won the Michael von Clemm Fellowship, an exchange program between the universities of Harvard and Oxford open to senior students. In 2011, she graduated magna cum laude from Harvard and attended the University of Oxford from 2012 - 2017, where she earned her Ph.D. in Atomic and Laser Physics. From 2022 to 2024, she was appointed as Distinguished Artist in Residence, Adjunct Professor of Practice at the New York University at Abu Dhabi, where she taught Creative Robotics & Tech. She continues to work at the intersection of ballet and robotics, and has been advisor and performer in large events, such as the World Economic Forum.
