Make No Little Plans...

Most adults in the US have access to healthcare. We are just a phone call away to make an appointment or an emergency room visit when a serious incident occurs.  Not so much in third world countries...  Guest Author James R. Most of us adults in the US have access to healthcare with just a phone call away to make an appointment or an emergency room visit when a serious incident occurs.  Not so much in third world countries...  Guest Author James R. Draheim, AIA, SustainableSciences Group.com, tells his professional career story and how his higher calling is making a difference.  Follow his journey, challenges included, and be inspired.

Imagine...you are asked to design a healthcare facility where there is little to no reliable infrastructure.  Your location likely lacks electricity, running water, sewer, telecommunications and paved roads.  Working with PANSANTÉ and an international team of leading architects, engineers, climate scientists, sustainability experts and economists we have developed the Sustainable Hospital to solve this very problem.  Our comprehensive approach includes the planning, design and engineering, fabrication, delivery, construction, financing, supplying equipment and maintenance/running support.  We have created a healthcare solution that uses 60-75%  less energy to operate than a traditional hospital and the energy we us is 100% renewable.  Our solution is scalable from 10-bed rural clinics to 1,000 bed teaching hospitals.

It was imperative in our quest to provide a sustainable hospital that we develop a solution that did not burden Level 1, 2 and 3* nations with expensive, unaffordable hospitals that fail to meet their needs and instead recognize and adapt to the often-limited resources and infrastructure  available.  We have adopted the United Nations - Sustainable Development Goals as a framework for our solution and we have developed a "net zero" energy and water hospital.

Building on my 30+ year career of developing hospitals primarily in Level 4 nations (USA, Western Europe and Asia), I left my previous employer to start my own firm (Sustainable Sciences Group) supporting PANSANTÉ in a quest to bring healthcare to Level 1, 2 and 3 nations where it is desperately needed.

In deciding to start my own firm, one of the bigger issues to grapple with is the scale of the endeavor.  Many people start a firm and can begin with small projects and teaming arrangements to gradually grow over time.  However, our business model is the global delivery of hospitals; there is no way to "start small!"  As Daniel Burnham once said "Make no little plansthey have no magic to stir men's blood and probably themselves will not be realized."

The complexity of our business from attracting investment, developing international sales, design, fabrication, shipping and logistics has necessitated working over a long period to put all of the pieces in place.  When starting something of this magnitude, you must be substantially capitalized in order to survive the start-up period.  I would also advise to never rely on a single investor or client.  You must always be working multiple options and expanding your sources of revenue.

My belief is that it is a fundamental human right to have access to healthcare.  Working with PANSANTÉ and a team of world-class consultants, we are committed to bringing affordable, sustainable healthcare to a part of the world where it is desperately needed.  Our commitment to creating positive change and building partnerships in these communities that benefit everyone economically, socially and environmentally has led us to create the Sustainable Hospital.

Jim cautions about the reality of fund raising...start-up investment, scale up firm/business growth and sustainability.  This message also applies to how you and your firm maintain and manage individual professional and corporate credentials.  Are your solutions basic small scale with file folders, spreadsheets, and maybe administrative staff who have requested training to better understand all the complexities involved?  We can help.  We will save your firm time and money and provide current and comprehensive compliance reports by effectively managing individual professional and corporate credentials.  Visit AECredentialing.com for more information.  You may also reach us at 913-608-7880.
