CHAMA RIVER CATCH & RELEASE AREAS
Fall on the Chama River

Thursday, October 22nd, 2015

Hi Everybody,

The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish (NMDG&F) is seeking public comment on the draft of a new fisheries management plan that will help guide the department’s efforts into the future. Land of Enchantment guides is involved in trying to get some catch and release areas established on the Chama River and we need your help by voicing your support of this initiative. Please help out in establishing catch and release areas on the Chama River by sending an email to: dgf-statewidefishplan@state.nm.us

A good example of what you might want to say in your email could be something like this:

I am writing this letter to request that you implement catch and release fishing areas on the Chama River, especially in the tailwater sections below the El Vado and Abiquiu dams. I would like to see catch and release areas that are of at least 4 to 5 continuous river miles each. I would also suggest that these areas be restricted to the use of artificial lures with single, barbless hooks.

I feel that, now more than ever, we need to protect our rivers from the over-harvesting and the keeping of too many fish. I fully support the creation of catch and release fishing areas on the Chama River and feel that these areas would benefit the trout fishery, the environment and the local economy.

Thank you for considering my opinion on this matter. Please do your best to make it happen.

Feel free to use the above italicized text as a guideline. Or, if you would like, just cut and paste it into your email; put your name at the bottom and send it off. We can make this happen if we all let the NMDG&F know how we feel. The comment period on the new fisheries management plan ends on October 31st, 2015 so it is important that you send your email before this date. Thank you for taking to do this - the Chama River and the trout will appreciate it.
