FLY FISHING NEWS & REPORT JUNE & JULY, 2011

Hi Everybody,

The fishing season is in full swing here and we have been having some really great days on the water. The run-off in some of the more northern rivers and streams is hanging on a bit later than usual but this could be a good thing. Most of the spots we have been fishing on have been fishing really well. For more information please check our website.

Fishing Report
THE VALLES CALDERA:  The Valles Caldera National Preserve (VCNP) opened on Saturday, May 21st and the fishing has been very good. We have been out to the preserve quite a few times already this season and have had really good luck in both San Antonio Creek and The East Fork of the Jemez. In the early part of the day the fish have been hitting nymph rigs. As the sun gets higher in the sky, we have been having great success on the surface with dries and/or dry dropper rigs - great fun!

Due to the dry spring the water levels are much lower than usual for this time of year but, so far, this hasn't seemed to bother the fish. They seem to be in great shape - fat, healthy, hungry and quite plentiful. This being said, don't wait too long if you are planning a trip to the VCNP. With the lower water levels and super dry conditions, there are already grumblings about closing the preserve due to fire danger if things don't improve. Pray for rain!

BRAZOS RIVER RANCH: Wow! The fishing on the ranch this

year is amazing. The fish seem to have made it through the winter exceptionally well and they are very hungry. Also it seems as though there are quite a few larger ones than usual, with lots caught in the over 20 inch range. The pictures in the sidebar to the right tell the whole story. Check out the top picture...  it is a 20" brook trout - pretty impressive. As well, the rainbows sure are big; way to go Craig and Darrin! If you are interested in fishing on the Brazos River Ranch, give us a call for more information and what dates are still available.

THE CHAMA:  As of this writing, the Chama is still running

very hard from the snowmelt, but it is starting to subside. This is actually a bit late in the year for this much run-off to still be occurring (but we'll take it!). The fishing should be really good at this time of year so we are going to make a trip up to the river to see what is happening. Give us a call for a report towards the end

of the week.

OTHER RIVERS & STREAMS: Conditions are improving daily throughout Northern New Mexico and we are trying to fish lots of spots to stay on top of things. Here are a few quick looks at some other rivers and streams we have been to recently: THE RIO GRANDE isn't fishing that well right now with a bit higher, off-color water. The fishing on THE SAN JUAN has been good all spring and should be excelent after the "flush". (See the article below). THE CONEJOS/ABEYTA RANCH is pretty much blown out with the flows getting up into the 1,500 cfs range. It probably will be at least a few weeks before the river conditions become fishable again. The streams of the Jemez drainage (E. FORK & SAN ANTONIO) have been fishing fairly well but the water levels are very low. This makes the fish very spooky and harder to catch. THE PECOS RIVER RANCH has had great fishing all year. The days we can get out there are limited this month. Give us a call to check availability.

The  picture above was taken at the Pecos River Ranch on 5/21.
What a nice 23.5" fish - congratulations to Andy!

Cimarroncita Ranch

Land of Enchantment Guides is happy to announce that we are now working with The Cimarroncita Ranch on the Cimarron River. The ranch offers 2 miles of private water that is full of good sized wild brown trout. The river flows through a large meadow that is interspersed with cottonwoods, pines and willows. There are some really nice pools and undercut banks which hold lots of fish. The streambed/bottom is mostly medium sized cobble which makes for easy wading. This type of bottom structure also creates an incredible habitat for insects - this means great hatches and lots of food for the fish!

We fished the Cimarroncita Ranch a few weeks ago and the fishing was excellent. The most productive method was nymphing; we actually had a few doubles! In the early afternoon, we tried some hoppers on the surface and had very good luck with them. As the season progresses, the dry fly fishing will get better and better. The Cimarron is a river where, quite often, one can fish strictly dry flies for a whole day and do very well. Being a tailwater that comes out of Eagle's Nest Lake, the water flows are well regulated. This means that the river almost always has a sufficient amount of water for great fishing, even in the driest of conditions.

The Cimarroncita Ranch is about a 2 hour drive, heading north from Santa Fe. Once you get past Espanola, it is a beautiful drive along the Rio Grande and then east through the mountains to Ute Park and then paralleling the Cimarron River. Along with its private stretch of the Cimarron's "Dream Water", the ranch offers great accommodations and wonderful meals. We would encourage anyone to consider at least an overnight stay and a couple of days of fishing at the Cimarroncita - you won't regret it.

Current Run-off Conditions

It seems that the run-off may have peaked and is starting to
back off in most of our northern rivers and streams. The Pecos and the Valles Caldera are getting very low but still have very fishable conditions right now. The Chama is still blown out from run-off but the flows are dropping; it should be very fishable within the next couple of weeks. The water is still a extremely high at the Abeyta Ranch/Conejos and is only fishing well in the side channels.

The smaller high altitude streams are still running fairly hard but should start to get good within the next week or so. The Rio Grande is a bit high for good fishing, off color and the fishing isn't that great. Most of northern New Mexico's rivers and streams have had a well below average run-off this year. Fishing should be excellent almost everywhere for the next month or so. We will just have to see what happens throughout the summer with the water levels and the possibility of drought conditions. All of our tailwater fisheries and the Rio Grande may be the answer. Give us a call anytime for daily river and fishing conditions.

San Juan River "Flush"

The Bureau of Reclamation (BOR), who manage the water flows out
of Navajo Dam into the San Juan river are going to do a big release
or "flush" of the river this year. There was no release last year so this is a good thing. Hopefully, it will clean some of the weed and debris out of the river.

The BOR has finalized this year's scheduled spring peak release from Navajo Reservoir. They will begin to increase the release on Monday, June 6, 2011 at 1:00 AM, reaching 5,000 cubic feet per second (cfs) on Thursday, June 9th at approximately 3:00 PM. The release will stay at 5,000 cfs for seven days. On Wednesday, June 15th at approximately 7:00 AM, the release will begin to decrease, reaching 500 cfs on Friday, June 17th at approximately 10:00 PM, where it will remain until further notice.

The fishing is usually excellent after the release so if you have a San Juan trip in mind, think about doing it shortly after June 17th.

Well that’s all for now. Give us a call anytime for up to date
fishing and weather conditions or just to say hi and "talk trout".

Stay Well,
