Grass is back in session! Fall ornamental grass plantings are among the easiest perennials to cultivate, and they bring stunning results, offering movement, height and even sound to the garden.

Two plant genera that do particularly well in late summer and fall are Miscanthus and Panicum. They can even chase away the winter blues, producing striking effects well into the cold season!

A Lawn Grass Help Session

It happens to many home gardeners, especially by the end of summer: the weary lawn looks dead. Whatever the cause – drought, pets, kiddie pool, neglect – dry, lifeless spots in the yard ruin the overall look, feel and value of your property. If the damage requires more than a mini makeover, consider seeding a new fall lawn this year. Late summer through early fall is the ideal time to start new turf in many areas of the US. It may take a few weeks before you see any green at the end of your new-lawn tunnel, but the rewards will be great. (And your bare feet will thank you for it!)

Calamagrostis x acutiflora ‘Karl Foerster’

Looking for a gorgeous grass that fits nicely into many landscape settings? Try this upright evergreen perennial. Karl Foerster feather reed grass features bright green, narrow leaves and bronze-pink summertime flowers that hold well-above the plant, giving it an airy appearance. The panicles and foliage turn gold in fall and last through winter. The plant needs at least 6 hours of direct sunlight and should be sheared to the ground in late winter. Its inflorescences hold up well in fresh and dried arrangements.
