Espaliered Apple TreeVisiting an apple orchard is fun, but even cooler is picking the crisp fruit off a tree growing in your own yard! The key to growing apples at home is to pick the right apple tree. Size, number and type are just some points to consider when selecting the right tree for your growing space. (Then, of course, you have the apple itself.) Although it may take years before you harvest a great bounty from your carefully chosen apple tree, the eventual reward will be well-worth it, as well as delicious!

Melrose Apple
It’s the state apple of Ohio, but you don’t need to live in the Buckeye State to grow this productive beauty! ‘Melrose’ is an adaptable apple tree variety that does well in many regions of the United States, including Southern California and the Pacific Northwest. Its medium to large, flat-topped fruits feature greenish-yellow, red-blushed skin and are often ribbed at the base. The firm, aromatic flesh is juicy, crisp and tart. This cultivar needs to be planted with another late blooming apple tree for cross-pollination. It does best in full sun and moist, well-drained soil, but tolerates light shade and periodic drought. For best fruit production, trees must be vigorously pruned and maintained.
