The White Gloves Gang Visits Motorcyclepedia

Thank you to Elizabeth Alberding, Chairman of the Mid-Atlantic Association of Museums Registrar's Committee and White Gloves Gang Member. Each year, the White Gloves Gang performs a day of service at local museums near their annual conference location. This year, Motorcyclepedia was lucky to be chosen as a recipient.

Elizabeth spent the day at Motorcyclepedia with the Collections Committee Members Tom Murphy and Keith Jones. They reviewed the best practices in caring, displaying and recording museum objects.
FEATURED BIKE
TRON:Legacy
"Lightcycle"

To celebrate Walt Disney's 2010 release of the major motion picture, "TRON: Legacy", Marc and Shannon Parker of Parker Brothers Custom Choppers in Melbourne, FL undertook the seemingly impossible!  This futuristic machine existed solely in the virtual world, until, using the animation as a guide, they built the low-slung motorcycle.  It took a great amount of creativity, ingenuity and technical knowledge to complete this build.

According to Marc,
" Other than the motor, it's all one-of-kind.  Every piece on this bike had to be crafted by hand from scratch. We had to reverse engineer it."

The bike is constructed with steel frames and features fiberglass bodywork. The power comes from a Suzuki TRL-1000 V-Twin engine.

Motorcyclepedia Trustee Spotlight
Meet Keith Jones!

Keith says that Motorcyclepedia is a fantastic place to learn about the history of motorcycles.  The Indian Timeline really highlights the evolution of motorcycles.  The Circa Gallery illustrates the many different designs of creativity.  The metal castings, levers, control rods show the level of workmanship and pride that went into building these machines. Being a volunteer has allowed Keith the time and access to learn about a wide range of esoteric motorcycles.  Books, magazines and bike shows just cannot compare.

An interesting discovery has been that “what’s old is new again.”  One of his bikes, a 2009 Buell Ulysses has the novel design of using the frame for containing the gas and oil.  Pierce was doing this in the 1910s.  The 1928 Böhmerland, which was made in Czechoslovakia, has cast aluminum alloy wheels.  This was “re-invented” in the 1970s and available from Yamaha in 1976.

Keith’s parents were not motorcycle enthusiasts, so Keith grew up studying motorcycle magazines and finally surreptitiously acquired a 50cc NSU moped, followed by an Army Surplus Indian Scout.  The larger-sized Indian brought about parental discovery.  After much discussion and negotiating and warnings of killing oneself on the highway, a ’65 Suzuki X-6 Hustler was proudly parked in the backyard.  A driving license and the Suzuki allowed for better paying jobs than mowing lawns.  More money brought more motorcycles.  And there were many different motorcycles and so many things to do on a motorcycle.  Various motorcycles with eight different engine formats allowed for wondering through much of the U.S. and several countries.  Keith competed in Scrambles, Motocross, trials, Enduro, road racing sprints and 24 hour races. And,in the past 56 years, he hasn’t killed himself yet!

Keith can be found at the museum most Fridays, working on documenting the collection and answering guest’s questions.

New Addition

De Dion Bouton

1899 De Dion-Bouton Tricycle

The De Dion-Bouton tricycle was the most successful motor vehicle in Europe from 1897 until 1901.  The single cylinder, 4 stroke engine utilized a spark ignition system rather than a glow plug that  helped the engine attain it's 1500 RPM, compared to 240 - 750 RPM of other engines at the time.  This, along with our 1897 De Dion-Bouton, are among the oldest running motorcycles in the U.S.!
