10 Unit Tasks for May

As your unit winds up the school year, don't forget about these important tasks:

  1. Attend your region's Spring Conference.
  2. Fill your committee chair positions.
  3. Remind your members to vote on your school budget and school board election.
  4. Fill out the Annual Officers’ Contact Information (Form A) online or mail a printed form to your region director immediately following your officer elections.
  5. Be sure your unit treasurer sends your final dues payment in plenty of time to arrive at the state office by May 31.
  6. Remind outgoing chairs and officers to prepare their procedure books and PTA materials for their successors.
  7. Remind teachers that the deadline for the NYS PTA Teacher Fellowship for Graduate Study in Memory of Richard Gazzola applications is June 15.
  8. Hold your unit's annual meeting.
  9. Enroll every potential member before the end of May.
  10. Determine whether or not your unit is eligible for any membership awards – find out more here.

Checklist to Go Out With Class

Are you wrapping up your term as president? Thanks for your service!

Here is a checklist of items to pass on and tasks to complete. This will help ensure the smooth transition of your position to your successor. Your unit's next president will thank you.

  • Prepare your files for transfer – discard items not relevant or timely
  • Copies of bylaws, procedures, president’s book
  • Flash drive containing important unit/council documents
  • List of phone contacts – school, region, state, etc.
  • Copy of paid insurance bill
  • Copy of Robert’s Rules
  • Copy of president’s section of the Resource Guide
  • Reminder of upcoming IRS 990 filing (after July 1 and before November 15)
  • Update bank account signatures
  • Submit your Annual Officers’ Contact Information (Form A)
  • Plan a meeting to transfer files for ALL new officers
  • Tell new officers about upcoming region officers trainings and encourage attendance
  • Thank everyone (think Advocate in Action award)

Summer Leadership Conference
July 21-23, 2017, Utica College

Utica College is a casual, relaxing and scenic environment where PTA members from around the state can network with state PTA leaders and one another, and expand leadership skills.

Past attendees have found the information interesting, useful, motivational and supportive. It is also a great opportunity to meet new PTA friends and share ideas.

Leadership Award In Honor of Jane Skrzypek

This NYS PTA award was established in 1991 to honor the memory of Jane Skrzypek. The purpose of this award is to recognize an outstanding leader in your PTA who, by his or her actions, inspires others to volunteer and assume leadership positions. Deadline: June 15

Teacher Fellowship For Graduate Study In Memory of Richard Gazzola

The Teacher Fellowship was established in 1961 to encourage excellent teachers to stay in the classroom by providing them opportunity to improve teaching skills, update professional knowledge, and expand professional perspectives. In 1992, the Fellowship was named to honor a “Master Teacher,” Richard Gazzola, who served on the New York State PTA Board of Directors for many years prior to his untimely death in 1991. Deadline: June 15

Pick A Reading Partner Program Award

The goal of the PARP Award is to encourage reading and other literacy-based activities in the home through recognition of PARP programs by:

  • Highlighting PARP programs
  • Sharing outstanding PARP ideas with other PTAs/schools/libraries/communities and other parent groups
  • Contributing to the understanding of the importance of reading and other literacy activities in the family setting and in the community.
