Dear colleagues:

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has launched a new childcare.gov website. This new parent- and community-facing website provides important and useful information, including state- and community-specific information about:

  • Understanding and finding child care (each state's child care search engine, child care quality rating and licensing information, etc.)
  • Financial assistance for families (subsidized child care assistance, TANF, WIC, SNAP, low income energy assistance)
  • Health and social services (early intervention, mental health, home visiting, child protective services, etc.)
  • Child development and early learning (developmental screening tools, information on local Early Head Start, Head Start, and other PreKindergarten programs)
The website is easy to navigate. Check it out as time allows and the need arises as you work to support families with young children experiencing homelessness.

As a reminder, the federally-funded child care subsidy program authorized under the Child Care Development Block Grant (CCDBG) Act and the Early Head Start and Head Start programs authorized under the Head Start Act must take certain steps to ensure access to child care and EHS/HS for families experiencing homelessness and prioritize them for program access.

For more information on CCDBG provisions related to homelessness, visit https://nche.ed.gov/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/ccdf-final-regs-nche-markup-sept-2016.pdf. For more information on Head Start Act provisions related to homelessness, visit https://nche.ed.gov/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/hs-final-regs-sept2016-homeless-1.pdf.
