National Center for Homeless Education | Homeless Education Listserv
The National Center for Homeless Education (NCHE) operates the U.S. Department of Education's technical assistance and information center for the federal Education for Homeless Children and Youth (EHCY) Program. NCHE is based at The SERVE Center at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG). NCHE hosts this Homeless Education Mailing List to share information and resources with educators, service providers, and other interested stakeholders about meeting the educational needs of children and youth experiencing homelessness. The ideas on this listserv do not necessarily reflect the views of NCHE, The SERVE Center, UNCG, or the U.S. Department of Education. ALL LOBBYING ACTIVITIES ARE STRICTLY FORBIDDEN.
Newly Available Data and Upcoming Data Changes

Dear colleagues:

We have several data related updates to share with you today.

First, the U.S. Department of Education (ED) has released data for all school districts that reported homeless students in the U.S during School Year 2015-16. To ensure student confidentiality, privacy protections have been applied, so the data file contains some suppressed data for some school districts. However, the files are beneficial to researchers or others looking for information at the school district level, such as organizations or agencies serving homeless children and youth. You can download the data file and the related documentation file at https://www2.ed.gov/about/inits/ed/edfacts/data-files/school-status-data.html.

Second, Consolidated State Performance Report (CSPR) data for School Year 2015-16 were just released on ED Data Express. You can search for your state, a group of states, or the entire U.S. by going to https://eddataexpress.ed.gov/state-tables-main.cfm.

(Please note that because both these data sources are based on school district level data, students who attended more than one school district will be included more than once. NCHE will release a report later this fall that examines unduplicated counts of students.)

Finally, the data collection package for School Years 2016-17 through 2018-19 has officially been approved. As you know, chronic absenteeism and graduation rate data will be collected for School Year 2016-17, in addition to the changes that were made to the served by McKinney-Vento subgrants data collection. However, this package also includes a requirement to provide the primary nighttime residence of unaccompanied homeless youth, along with the current requirement to provide the primary nighttime residence of all students. This new data collection will begin with School Year 2017-18.
