|
|
|
Dear colleagues:
The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, as amended, requires that schools counselors provide college preparation and readiness assistance to students experiencing homelessness. This NCHE brief explores the role of school counselors in providing college preparation and readiness supports to students experiencing homelessness, and recommends school partnership strategies to ensure that homeless students receive the individualized supports needed to transition successfully to postsecondary education.
Topics covered include:
- Basic information about the role of the school counselor
- The types of supports school counselors can provide students experiencing homelessness
- Strategies for partnership between school counselors, local homeless education liaisons, other school staff, parents/guardians/other caregivers, institutions of higher education, and federal GEAR UP and TRIO programs
- Resources for more information
NCHE anticipates offering a webinar based on this new issue brief in the next couple of months. We'll announce registration here on the NCHE listserv and hope you'll plan to join and share widely with colleagues.
Best regards,
Christina Dukes
