Greetings colleagues:
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ SOAR Technical Assistance Center has developed six custom SSI for Children information sheets that provide guidance for assisting with the child SSI application process. Additional information follows.
What is SSI?
SSI stands for Supplemental Security Income. The Social Security Administration (SSA) administers this program. SSA pays monthly benefits to people with limited income and resources who are disabled, blind, or age 65 or older. Blind or disabled children also may get SSI.
How can SSI help children, youth, and families experiencing homelessness?
SSI can help children (and their families) who are at-risk of or experiencing homelessness by providing stabilizing income for the household.
Which children and youth are eligible for SSI?
Children from birth up to age 18 who have a disability and are low-income may be eligible to receive SSI benefits. Transition age youth (TAY), (youth and young adults between the ages of 16 and 25), who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness and have a serious mental illness and other medical impairment also may be eligible to receive SSI benefits.
