Today, Chapin Hall released Missed Opportunities in Youth Pathways Through Homelessness. This report reflects findings from in-depth interviews conducted with 215 young people in the largest qualitative study on youth homelessness in the U.S. This is the sixth in a series of Research-to-Impact briefs.

From young people in five U.S. counties, we learned that their stories of homelessness most often began with early housing instability and family disruptions, including family homelessness and entrance into foster care. Young people also experienced significant personal losses before and during their pathways through homelessness, including the death of parents and caregivers. Furthermore, youth cycled between many types of sleeping arrangements: from being on the street, to couch surfing, to staying in shelters. Their experience was influenced both by their personal relationships and whether they had someone to stay with, and structural factors, such as the availability of shelter beds. By identifying the common experiences that lead to homelessness, we also identify where, when, and with whom we need to intervene to prevent homelessness.
Our first Research-to-Impact brief, Missed Opportunities: Youth Homelessness in America, highlighted results from our national survey on unaccompanied youth homelessness. Findings show that nearly 4.2 million youth and young adults in America experienced some form of homelessness over the course of a year.

The second brief found that LGBTQ youth were more than twice as likely to experience homelessness as their peers, and were more likely to suffer adversities before and during homelessness.

The third brief found that rates of pregnancy and parenthood are high among youth experiencing homelessness, and that many young parents are homeless with their children.

The fourth brief summarizes lessons learned from conducting point-in-time counts of youth experiencing homelessness in 22 diverse counties across the United States.

The fifth brief explores youth experiences of homelessness in rural communities, where homelessness is as prevalent as in urban spaces.

Chapin Hall provides national leadership on what works to prevent and end youth homelessness. Our integrated, multi-component research provides a deep understanding of the conditions that lead to homelessness for young people.

Please watch your email for the release of additional Research-to-Impact briefs later this year.
