Incorporating Education into Coordinated Community Responses to Youth and Young Adult Homelessness: Lessons from the Youth Homelessness Demonstration ProgramImage of the first page of NCHE's guided discussion tool
Dear colleagues:

Youth Homelessness Demonstration Program (YHDP) communities work to develop and implement a coordinated community response to prevent and end youth and young adult (YYA) homelessness. As part of this response, they address the four core youth outcomes outlined in the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness' Federal Framework to End Youth Homelessness: stable housing, education and employment, permanent connections, and wellbeing. NCHE works with communities to support the inclusion of education partnerships and pathways in YHDP work.

This NCHE publication
  • explores the role of education in the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s YHDP initiative;
  • summarizes key education outcomes in, lessons learned in, and technical assistance provided to YHDP communities; and
  • shares cross-system innovations and promising practices for preventing and ending youth and young adult homelessness in urban, suburban, and rural communities.
Topics addressed include
  • About YHDP
  • The Role of Education in YHDP
  • Education Engagement and Outcomes in YHDP
  • Key Lessons Learned
  • Partnerships Across the Rural Montana CoC YHDP Site
  • Partnerships Across Urban CoC YHDP Sites

  • YHDP-funded Education Projects
Congress has appropriated funding for additional YHDP rounds. NCHE will announce when the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has released the Notice of Funding Availability (NoFA) for the next YHDP competition.

NCHE thanks YHDP communities, the U.S. Department of Education, and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for partnering to bring greater focus to the educational needs of young people experiencing homelessness.

Please feel free to share this resource with interested colleages.

Best regards,
