The National Center for Homeless Education (NCHE) operates the U.S. Department of Education's technical assistance and information center for the federal Education for Homeless Children and Youth (EHCY) Program. NCHE is based at The SERVE Center at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG). NCHE hosts this Homeless Education Mailing List to share information and resources with educators, service providers, and other interested stakeholders about meeting the educational needs of children and youth experiencing homelessness. NCHE is pleased to release the following homeless education issue briefs updated to reflect new provisions included in the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA):

Dispute Resolution
This brief identifies the key provisions of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act dealing with dispute resolution, and offers strategies for implementation.

Ensuring Full Participation in Extracurricular Activities for Students Experiencing Homelessness
This brief is designed to help local homeless education liaisons and school district administrators ensure that children and youth experiencing homelessness can overcome the barriers they often encounter to participating fully in extra-curricular activities.

Serving Students Experiencing Homelessness under Title I, Part A
This brief explains how Title I, Part A of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, and Subtitle VII-B of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act intersect, and suggests strategies for effective collaboration. Sections include: Statutory Requirements for Cross-Program Collaboration; Automatic Eligibility for Title I, Part A Services; Serving Students Experiencing Homelessness under Schoolwide and Targeted Assistance Programs; Serving Students Experiencing Homelessness with Set-aside Funds; and Strategies for Collaboration to Improve Student Outcomes.

Supporting the Education of Immigrant Students Experiencing Homelessness
This brief explains the challenges many immigrant and refugee families encounter in adjusting to life in the United States, including integrating into the U.S. public school system. Determining homelessness among immigrant families, and strategies for supporting the integration of immigrant students into U.S. schools are discussed. Information presented is geared towards assisting local homeless education liaisons and other school personnel with identifying and serving immigrant students experiencing homelessness.
