The National Center for Homeless Education (NCHE) operates the U.S. Department of Education's technical assistance and information center for the federal Education for Homeless Children and Youth (EHCY) Program. NCHE is based at The SERVE Center at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG). NCHE hosts this Homeless Education Mailing List to share information and resources with educators, service providers, and other interested stakeholders about meeting the educational needs of children and youth experiencing homelessness. School Safety and Transportation Twitter Chat | #SafeSchoolsTransport

Join the Readiness and Emergency Management for Schools (REMS) Technical Assistance (TA) Center (@remstacenter), the U.S. Department of Transportation (@USDOT) and its National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (@NHTSAgov); the Safe Routes to School National Partnership (@SafeRoutesNow); and the National Center for Safe and Supportive Learning Environments (@SSLearn) for a Twitter Chat on School Safety and Transportation.

  • When: Friday, July 28, 2017 from 2 PM to 3 PM ET
  • Where: Use #SafeSchoolsTransport to join the conversation on Twitter!
  • Co-Hosts: @remstacenter, @USDOT/@NHTSAgov, @SafeRoutesNow, and @SSLearn
  • Invited Guests: Do you represent a state or local education agency, an emergency management agency, a local Safe Routes to School program, or a community partner agency in school transportation safety? Join us Friday!

During the chat, partners will highlight

  1. recent statistics on school transportation-related emergency incidents;
  2. details regarding federal school bus regulations
  3. ways schools can incorporate plans related to transportation (school buses, bus stops, safe routes to school) into existing safety policies
  4. details on how Safe Routes to School programs have improved whole community safety; and
  5. recommendations related to the hiring and training of school transportation staff.

We also invite state and local agencies to share details on how they manage school transportation programs to ensure the safety of students and staff.
