 Spiritual Axiom and Sponsorship

I am so grateful I have a spiritual tool box I can use when needed.  Our literature states that “it is a spiritual axiom that every time we are disturbed, no matter what the cause, there is something wrong with us.”  That line in our 12&12 has always punched my ego in the face even when it’s justifiable anger causing the disturbance.  I certainly know when my spiritual axiom has been disturbed.  Even with the tenth step, I’m more grateful that I have a sponsor that I can call because he is part of my process of helping me look inward to quiet that disturbance.  My defense against the first drink has to go through all the meetings that I attend on a regular basis, the loving God of my understanding, my sponsor, my BFF, my liter-mates, my home group and service. That has kept me in a life that is happy, joyous, and free.

I am a grateful member of Alcoholics Anonymous and I love being sober!

Hi from the New NVI Newsletter Editor!

Being of service matters! Early in my sobriety it was drilled into me that service can make a real difference between staying sober and taking that first, too often fatal, drink. I am grateful for the opportunity to broaden my service by being the new NVI newsletter editor. To be on the front line of sharing information with our AA community is a wonderful way for me to spend my time. A big shout out to Chris, our NVI Operations Manager, who has been serving in this role for quite some time. Thank you Chris for your sustained support to NVI and AA!!

This newsletter is all of ours!! If you have any suggestions for how to improve it, have ideas for new or different content, or have information about anything AA related in our area, let me know with an email to newsletter@nvintergroup.org.

Small Talk

If there’s a place I have to practice the principles in my affairs it’s the dentist office.  Small talk just is not my forte in the dentist chair.  That dental hygienist doesn’t know my self centered fear has activated some character defects--fear of any pain, but mainly financial fear.  Over time in the program I have put my HP to work when it comes to my dentist appointments so that I can be a good dental patient.

Courtesy, kindness, and love are working because I keep returning for my scheduled appointments!!

The Northern Virginia Intergroup (NVI) is a service center that supports all A.A. groups in the Northern Virginia Area.

Each AA group is asked to elect an Intergroup Representative (IGR). The IGRs help make up the NVI Board of Directors. The Board of Directors is responsible for decisions regarding NVI. As Trusted Servants, IGRs should attend the NVI Board of Directors’ meeting the FIRST Tuesday of each month at 7:30pm at our offices or online:
  • Bring questions and requests from their group to the Board meeting.
  • Inform the NVI operations manager of group contacts for 12th step list.
  • Inform the NVI operations manager of a person to contact if a question rises concerning their Group, such as the listing in Where & When.
  • Be familiar with NVI functions to answer questions the group may have regarding NVI.
  • Inform your group of the necessity of making contributions to Northern Virginia Intergroup.
  • Encourage group members to get involved with Northern Virginia Intergroup.
  • Report regularly to their group of actions and decisions taking place at NVI Board meeting.
