Excerpts from the Big Book
related to Step Six

Step six might look straightforward, and some breeze right through it. Others though know that both steps six and seven are foundational to sustained sobriety. Defects of character arise sometimes often and sometimes rarely. They are not usually excised all at once and forever. Here is the core message of Step Six:

Entirely Ready:  Accept your defects, stop making excuses for them, and become willing to do the work to change.

Willingness Over Perfection: You do not have to fix everything overnight. The Big Book notes that with most defects, you will "have to be content with patient improvement" rather than expecting them to be lifted all at once.

The Three Key Questions: The Big Book asks three specific questions to gauge our readiness:

1)  Are we now ready to let go of all the things we have admitted are
    objectionable?

2)  Can God now take them all—every one?

3)  If we cling to something we won't let go, do we ask for help being
     willing?

JUNE is the

SIXTH month

Step 6: Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.

Tradition 6:  An AA group ought never endorse, finance, or lend the AA name to any related facility or outside enterprise, lest problems of money, property, and prestige divert us from our primary purpose.

Concept 6:  On behalf of A.A. as a whole, our General Service Conference has the principal responsibility for the maintenance of our world services, and it traditionally has the final decision respecting large matters of general policy and finance. But the Conference also recognizes that the chief initiative and the active responsibility in most of these matters should be exercised primarily by the Trustee members of the Conference when they act among themselves as the General Service Board of Alcoholics Anonymous.
