Moroccan Thyme: Downregulating the Cytokines

The oil of Moroccan Thyme (Thymus satureioïdes) was originally recognized by French style aromatherapy as an agent to counteract chronic infections by lowering excessive gamma globulin levels. The current health crisis has brought this oil to center stage as some of its properties appear to address lung inflammation issues.

Moroccan Thyme

The Site: Touching the Sahara

As the vernacular name indicates, the main area of production for Thymus satureioïdes today remains Morocco, especially to the south where the Atlas mountains meet the Sahara desert. Our oil comes from  the picturesque area around Taroudant in the Sous valley.

Though Moroccan Thyme is a commercial product it is not produced in sufficient quantities and is occasionally unavailable. It has always been part of traditional herbal remedies around the Mediterranean.

Therapeutic Properties

The unique composition of Moroccan Thyme almost miraculously fits the demands of the current health issues as it contains about 30% or more borneol. Recent studies have shown that borneol downregulates proinflammatory cytokines and suggest that it may help ameliorate or prevent acute lung injury (ALI) when proinflammatory cytokines are over expressed. Borneol inhibits proinflammatory cytokines TNF alpha, IL-1b and IL-6. This Thyme also contains about 6-10% carvacrol.  Carvacrol is not only highly antimicrobial and antiviral, but also induces the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10.

As an oil that regulates these important parameters, Moroccan Thyme has been used in French style aromatherapy as an effective immunological modulator to slow excessive immune reactions without compromising necessary defensive functions. Thymus satureioïdes counteracts pathogenic microorganisms as well as the excess cytokines that often arise with the reaction of the immune system to certain viruses and other triggers.

#219 Moroccan Thyme

The two main components of the oil are carvacrol and borneol. Oils like Oregano can be hard to work with and are quite irritant due to the concentration of carvacrol. Not so with the Moroccan Thyme. Its concentration of carvacrol is low enough to make the oil better tolerated. But the truly outstanding quality of this Thyme is its uniquely high borneol content. Among the commonly available oils in aromatherapy, Thymus satureioïdes has by far the highest borneol content.

Sometimes there is so much borneol in the oil that it will crystallize half of the bottle content as a solid. Storing slightly above room temperature for a day will normally return the content to a liquid.
